MCDUFFIE <br /> WHEREAS, John Delphus "J.D." McDuffie represented Sanford and Lee County throughout his automobile <br /> racing career of four decades; and. <br /> WHEREAS, J.D., being born and raised in Sanford, NC was not only an ambassador to the sport of automobile <br /> racing, but also proudly carried the name of Sanford-area sponsors on the side of his iconic #70 racecar; and, <br /> WHEREAS, being an independent owner/driver, he made a living by building and driving racecars and while <br /> he maintained his race team on a shoestring budget, J.D. remained a fierce competitor on dirt tracks, as well as <br /> asphalt tracks as a NASCAR driver: and, <br /> WHEREAS, J.D. was highly admired and respected by his fellow drivers and competitors alike, and earned <br /> their respect by always maintaining a positive attitude, a winning spirit and never giving up in the face of <br /> adversity; and, <br /> WHERAS, J.D. was inducted into the Augusta International Racing Hall of Fame on September 21, 2019 and <br /> on September 5, 2022, a mural will be unveiled in downtown Sanford, NC as a tribute to Sanford's Hometown <br /> Hero, J.D. McDuffie; and. <br /> WHEREAS, although he is no longer with us as he tragically lost his life in a racing accident at Watkins Glen, <br /> NY on August 11, 1991, John Delphus "J.D." McDuffie's winning spirit, determination and memory lives on; <br /> and, <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Lee County Board of Commissioners that a tribute is <br /> hereby bestowed upon John Delphus "J.D." McDuffie for his numerous years of representing Sanford and Lee <br /> County during his racing career and proclaim September 5th, 2022 as J.D.
