2006 -/ <br />LEE_ <br />Committed Today for a Better Tomorrow <br />RESOLUTION <br />ADOPTING THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE LEE COUNTY <br />RURAL FIRE PROTECTION IMPROVEMENT TASK FORCE <br />WHEREAS, the Rural Fire Protection Improvement Task Force was appointed by the Lee County Board <br />of Commissioners on November 21, 2005, to study and make recommendations on various matters <br />pertaining to the improvement of fire services in Lee County, and <br />WHEREAS, the Rural Fire Protection Improvement Task Force studied challenges facing the volunteer <br />fire service by obtaining the assistance of fire service professionals, local government attorneys and State <br />Fire Marshal officials; and <br />WHEREAS, Lee County contracts with nine volunteer fire departments to provide fire protection for <br />county residents which is funded by a special tax levied by the Board of Commissioners; and <br />WHEREAS, several of the volunteer departments are currently staffed by full and /or part-time staff to <br />assist with routine department matters; and <br />WHEREAS, a Fire Marshal position was budgeted in FY 2004 -05 to be a liaison to the volunteer <br />• departments and also be responsible for all code enforcement and inspection activities; and <br />WHEREAS, the Rural Fire Protection Improvement Task Force asked that the Commissioners accept the <br />presented written report. <br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Lee County Board of Commissioners does hereby <br />accept and approve the following recommendations from the Lee County Rural Fire Protection <br />Improvement Task Force: <br />1. Authorize County Manager to appoint a Fire Marshal; <br />2. Authorize County Manager to reclassify Fire Marshal position to a department head and set <br />salary for said position; <br />3. Create by resolution and appoint a Fire Advisory Board; and <br />4. Integrate the Fire Chiefs' Association into the County Fire Service organizational structure <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Manager is directed to initiate the processes necessary <br />(including, but not limited to reports, public hearings, resolutions and budget amendments) for the Board <br />of Commissioners to implement the above initiatives in an effort to ensure the continued positive direction <br />of Lee County fire services. <br />Adopted this the 6 day of February 2006. <br />n.� <br />Herbert A.
