2008 - <br />• <br />LEE COUNTY <br />Committed Today for a Better Tomorrow <br />RESOLUTION <br />WHEREAS, the O. T. Sloan Family has a long and distinguished record of supporting <br />public recreation programs in Lee County; and <br />WHEREAS, Mr. O. T. Sloan, Sr. served for many years on the Recreation Commission <br />of the City of Sanford, which was then the only such agency in the County; and <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Sloan, Sr. was an advocate for a countywide recreation program, which <br />came about when the City of Sanford phased out its program and conveyed its facilities to the <br />County; and <br />WHEREAS, interested citizens got a non - profit corporation chartered in 1968, which <br />later changed its name to Lee County Recreation Foundation, Inc. and in the same year <br />arranged through bank financing to purchase the Snipes Property known as Snipes Lumber <br />Company location; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1973 the Lee County Recreation Foundation, Inc. was able to retire its <br />• debt on the Snipes Property, due in part to a significant contribution by Mr. Sloan, Sr., and <br />therefore conveyed to Lee County 43.3 acres, more or less, of the Snipes Property; and <br />WHEREAS, in recognition of Mr. O. T. Sloan, Sr.'s leadership in promoting public <br />recreational facilities and his financial :support of such programs, the Lee County Recreation <br />Foundation, Inc. made its conveyance to Lee County subject to restrictions requiring the area <br />conveyed be known as O. T. Sloan Park and that it be used exclusively for park and <br />recreational purposes; and <br />WHEREAS, in 2007 Carol Sloan and husband, O. T. (Temple) Sloan, Jr., through the <br />Carol and Temple Sloan Foundation, made a gift to Lee County which enabled the County to <br />acquire 9.45 acres of land adjacent to the present O. T. Sloan Park as an addition thereto; and <br />WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners is of the opinion that generosity in support of <br />public endeavors is an example of good citizenship and should be encouraged; and <br />WHEREAS, the actions of the Sloan Family will materially benefit the people of Lee <br />County for years to come and as the elected representatives of the people of Lee County it is <br />appropriate for the Board of Commissioners to acknowledge appreciation for their gifts. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of Lee County <br />as follows: <br />Section 1: That it is proud to own the 43.3 acre tract of land on Bragg Street in the <br />City of Sanford and deem it fitting and proper that it is named the O. T. Sloan Park. <br />Section 2: That It officially and publicly acknowledges its appreciation for the <br />generosity of Mr. and Mrs. O. T. (Temple) Sloan, Jr., acting through their foundation, who made <br />• it possible for Lee County to acquire a 9.45 acre tract of land on Bragg Street, Sanford, as an <br />addition to the O. T. Sloan Park on November 27, 2007. <br />Section 3: That the Clerk to the Board furnishes a certified copy of this resolution to <br />the Carol and Temple Sloan Foundation and to Carol and O. T.
