2008 - 6--1 <br />• LEE COUNTY <br />Committed Today for a Better Tomorrow <br />PROCLAMATION <br />OLDER AMERICANS MONTH <br />MAY 2008 <br />WHEREAS, Lee County is home to more than 9,000 citizens 60 years of age or older; and <br />WHEREAS, this year marks the 43 Anniversary of the passage of the "Older Americans Act" <br />by the United States Congress, and <br />WHEREAS, America's aging population reached another turning point in 2008 as our nation's <br />first baby boomer received her Social Security retirement check on January 1 s`, representing the <br />leading edge of an aging demographic wave, and <br />WHEREAS, it is projected that 75 of North Carolina's 100 counties will have more people age <br />60 and older than 17 and younger by the year 2030; and <br />• WHEREAS, this year's national theme for Older Americans Month, "Working Together for <br />Strong, Healthy, and Supportive Communities" reflects North Carolina's commitment to help <br />all communities to become more livable and senior - friendly to promote healthy aging and active <br />engagement among people of all ages and to assure easy access to reliable information to aid <br />consumers in making choices about care and in preparing for their future, and <br />WHEREAS, Senior Centers across the State celebrate Older Americans Month through <br />ceremonies, events, fairs, and other activities. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the Lee County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim May 2008 <br />as Older Americans Month and urges all citizens to honor older adults, and those who care for <br />them, during May and throughout the year.
