LEE <br /> Committed Today f or a Better Tomorrow <br /> PROCLAMATION <br /> WHEREAS,a century ago 4.7 million American families sent their sons and daughters off to World <br /> War I, including more than 87,000 North Carolinians; and, <br /> WHEREAS,the resources of our entire nation were brought to bear on the war effort that was to <br /> be "the war to end all wars"; and, <br /> WHEREAS, 116,516 Americans gave their lives in the war, including 629 Tar Heels that were killed <br /> in action, 204 that perished from battle wounds, and 1,542 that succumbed to disease; and, <br /> WHEREAS, an additional 200,000 Americans were physically wounded in World War I, including <br /> more than 3,600 that returned to North Carolina, and countless others that suffered for the rest <br /> of their lives from mental scars and combat trauma; and, <br /> WHEREAS,the tolling of bells is a traditional expression of honor and remembrance for Armistice <br /> Day—a day dedicated to the cause of world peace; and, <br /> WHEREAS, in November 2018 the world will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the <br /> Armistice that ended the fighting in World War I at 11:00 a.m., November 11, 1918—the eleventh <br /> hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lee County Board of Commissioners proclaim <br /> November 11, 2018 as World War I Remembrance Day in Lee County, North Carolina and call <br /> upon residents to observe this day —the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day - by remembering <br /> and honoring Veterans of our Armed Services for their sacrifices and efforts to secure world <br /> peace and to protect our country and our freedoms. <br /> Dated this the 5th day of November, 2018. <br /> c24,74/(at.41.7y7yee.....--- <br /> 1V Amy M.
