2005 - 6 8 <br />• <br />RESOLUTION <br />IN <br />RECOGNITION <br />WHEREAS, mental retardation is a condition which affects more than 7 million <br />Americans and their families; and <br />WHEREAS, public awareness and education enhance a communitv's <br />understanding of the issues affecting people with mental retardation; and <br />WHEREAS, people with mental retardation can be vital and vibrant members of <br />our communities, improving the quality of life for all of us; and <br />WHEREAS, the month of March has been designated National Mental <br />Retardation Awareness Month, with 100,000 members and 900 chapters of The Arc <br />undertaking public awareness, educational, and fundraising initiatives; and <br />WHEREAS, The Arc of the United States is the nation's leading volunteer -based <br />organization advocating for and with people with mental retardation and related <br />developmental disabilities and their families. <br />• NOW, THEREFORE, We, the Lee County Board of Commissioners proclaim <br />March 2005 as <br />MENTAL RETARDATION AWARENESS MONTH <br />in Lee County, North Carolina, and urge the citizens of Lee County to give full support of <br />efforts to enable people with mental retardation to live full and productive lives of <br />inclusion in our communities. <br />Adopted this the 28 day of February 2005. <br />D <br />�n <br />ATTEST : <br />A.
