MINUTES OF MEETING <br /> OF <br /> BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br /> April 25, 1957 <br /> The Board of Commissioners of Lee County met in the Commissioners <br /> Room at the Courthouse on Thursday, April 25, 1957 at 2:00 o'clock P. M. <br /> in special called session, pursuant to notice duly given as by law required. <br /> The following members of the Board were present for dispatch of business: <br /> Commissioners Percy Measamer, Evander Winstead, J. M. Cheshire, <br /> Sion H. Kelly and Clyde J. Atkins. <br /> Chairman Percy Measamer presided and the following business was <br /> transacted; <br /> The County Attorney presented the official special election ballot for the <br /> local tax/At-Lee County Schools and the same was, on motion of Commissioner <br /> Atkins, seconded by Commissioner Kelly, unanimously adopted. <br /> Commissioner Kelly then stated to the Board that he had requested the <br /> County Attorney to draw a bill to be introduced in the Legislature providing <br /> for the nomination of County Commissioners by districts. There followed a <br /> full and complete discussion of the bill. Thereafter, Commissioner Kelly <br /> moved that the County Attorney be instrugted to draw a bill authorizing an <br /> election in Lee County upon the question°/districting the County for the <br /> nomination of County Commissioners and that the election be held at the time <br /> of the general election in 1958 and if the voters of the County favored the <br /> nominating of Commissioners from districts in Lee County, the act would go <br /> into effect at the general election of 1960. <br /> The motion was seconded by Commissioner Atkins and the same was <br /> unanimously adopted. <br /> E. M. Underwood, Clerk of the Superior Court, appeared before the Board <br /> to determine the decision of the Board as to the number of terms of Superior <br /> Court that should be held in Lee County for the year beginning July 1, 1957, <br /> and ending June 30, 1958. There followed full discussion of this question. <br /> Commissioner Cheshire then moved that the Clerk of Superior Court, the <br /> County Attorney, and the President of the Lee County Bar Association be <br /> designated as a Committee to make a study of the problem and to make a <br /> recommendation to the Lee County members of the General Assembly for the <br /> setting of the terms of court for Lee County. <br /> The Chairman then presented for the consideration of the Board a petition <br /> reading as follows, to-wit: <br /> PETITION <br /> April 17, 1957 <br /> To the Board of Commissioners <br /> Lee County, North Carolina <br /> Gentlemen: <br /> We, the undersigned voters of Lee County, believing that a majority of Lee <br /> County Citizens are in favor of the lawful sale of alcoholic beverages, and <br /> convinced that a controlled system of handling alcoholic beverages is preferable <br /> to the illegal bootleg system now in operation, respectfully request the Board <br /> of Commissioners of Lee County to petition members of the General Assembly <br /> representing Lee County to introduce and secure enactment of legislation <br />
