• <br /> II <br /> SPECIAL MEETING CF THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br /> COMMISSIONERS OF LEE COUNTY <br /> May 27, 1957 <br /> The Board of County Commissioners of Lee County met in the <br /> Commissioners Room at the courthouse'on the 27th day of May, 1957 at <br /> 1:30 o'clock p. M. in special called session, pursuant to notice duly given as <br /> by law required. The following members of the Board were present for <br /> dispatch of business: <br /> Commissioners Percy Measamer, Sion H. Kelly and Clyde J. Atkins. <br /> Chairman Percy Measamer presided and the following business was <br /> transacted: <br /> The County Attorney pointed out that by authority of a resolution adopted <br /> by the Board on the /3Z(day of pxaM , 1957, a majority of theslaw <br /> enforcement officers of the county, who participated in the law Enforcement <br /> Officer's Benefit and Retirement Fund, voted on May 15, 1957 in favor of <br /> coverage under the Social Security Act, and that in order for all officers in <br /> the County to be covered under the plan, it was necessary for the Board to <br /> adopt a resolution empowering the Chairman to enter into an agreement wih <br /> the North Carolina Public Employee's Social Security Agency. The County <br /> Attorney thereupon presented the following resolution, to-wit: <br /> "WHEREAS, Section 218 of Title II of the Federal Social Security Act has <br /> been amended for the purpose of extending to the policeman and other law <br /> enforcement officers of political subdivisions of the State and their instrument- <br /> alities, and to the dependents and survivors of such employees, the basic <br /> protection afforded to general employees by the Old-Age and Survivors <br /> Insurance program as embodied in the Social Security Act, and <br /> WHEREAS, the governing Board of this political subdivision has already <br /> extended such coverage to other employees by agreement with the Executive <br /> Secretary of the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System, whose <br /> title is: Director of the North Carolina Public Employees' Social Security <br /> Agency, as the State Agency authorized to enter into agreements for the <br /> purpose of extending such benefits to employees of such political subdivisiors, <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, the governing authority of this political subdivision of the State <br /> desires to extend to its eligible policement, other law enforcement officers <br /> and their dependents and survivors the security, protection and benefits <br /> provided for other employees, and <br /> WHEREAS, the extension of such benefits has been approved by a referendum <br /> as provided by law: NOW THEREFORE, <br /> Be it resolved by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Lee in regular <br /> meeting, a quorum being present: <br /> 1. That the governing authority of this political subdivision of the State, to <br /> the extent of its lawful authority and power, does hereby extend to its eligible <br /> policemen or other law enforcement officers the benefits authorized by Title <br /> II of the Federal Social Security Act, as amended, and as authority by <br /> Article 2 of Chapter 135 of the General Statutes of North Carolina, as amended <br /> Such coverage will be effective January 1, 1956. <br /> 2. That Percy Measamer, Chairman, is hereby fully empowered and <br /> authorized, and is hereby ordered and directed, to prepare, with the coopera- <br /> tion of the Director of the North Carolina Public Employees' Social Security <br /> Agency, a suitable agreement or coverage plan as provided by law, the same <br /> to be properly executed in behalf of this Board and approved by said <br /> Director of the State Agency for the purpose of making available to such <br />
