• II SPECIAL MEETING CF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF LEE COUNTY May 27, 1957 The Board of County Commissioners of Lee County met in the Commissioners Room at the courthouse'on the 27th day of May, 1957 at 1:30 o'clock p. M. in special called session, pursuant to notice duly given as by law required. The following members of the Board were present for dispatch of business: Commissioners Percy Measamer, Sion H. Kelly and Clyde J. Atkins. Chairman Percy Measamer presided and the following business was transacted: The County Attorney pointed out that by authority of a resolution adopted by the Board on the /3Z(day of pxaM , 1957, a majority of theslaw enforcement officers of the county, who participated in the law Enforcement Officer's Benefit and Retirement Fund, voted on May 15, 1957 in favor of coverage under the Social Security Act, and that in order for all officers in the County to be covered under the plan, it was necessary for the Board to adopt a resolution empowering the Chairman to enter into an agreement wih the North Carolina Public Employee's Social Security Agency. The County Attorney thereupon presented the following resolution, to-wit: "WHEREAS, Section 218 of Title II of the Federal Social Security Act has been amended for the purpose of extending to the policeman and other law enforcement officers of political subdivisions of the State and their instrument- alities, and to the dependents and survivors of such employees, the basic protection afforded to general employees by the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance program as embodied in the Social Security Act, and WHEREAS, the governing Board of this political subdivision has already extended such coverage to other employees by agreement with the Executive Secretary of the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System, whose title is: Director of the North Carolina Public Employees' Social Security Agency, as the State Agency authorized to enter into agreements for the purpose of extending such benefits to employees of such political subdivisiors, and WHEREAS, the governing authority of this political subdivision of the State desires to extend to its eligible policement, other law enforcement officers and their dependents and survivors the security, protection and benefits provided for other employees, and WHEREAS, the extension of such benefits has been approved by a referendum as provided by law: NOW THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Lee in regular meeting, a quorum being present: 1. That the governing authority of this political subdivision of the State, to the extent of its lawful authority and power, does hereby extend to its eligible policemen or other law enforcement officers the benefits authorized by Title II of the Federal Social Security Act, as amended, and as authority by Article 2 of Chapter 135 of the General Statutes of North Carolina, as amended Such coverage will be effective January 1, 1956. 2. That Percy Measamer, Chairman, is hereby fully empowered and authorized, and is hereby ordered and directed, to prepare, with the coopera- tion of the Director of the North Carolina Public Employees' Social Security Agency, a suitable agreement or coverage plan as provided by law, the same to be properly executed in behalf of this Board and approved by said Director of the State Agency for the purpose of making available to such
