BOOK 7 PAPE 482 <br />MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD <br />- <br />OF COMMISSIONERS FOR THE COUNTY OF LEE <br />Monday, December 7, 1970 <br />The regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners for the County <br />of Lee convened at 10:00 o'clock a. m. on Monday, December 7, 1970, the same <br />being the first Monday in December, 1970, and the date on which the Commissioners <br />elected at the last General Election take office. It appearing that Commissioners <br />Perry White and Gordon A. Wicker have two years remaining on their terms and <br />Commissioners William H. Cooper, J. Eugene Rogers and Franklin D. Wicker have <br />been duly elected to four year terms as Commissioners, and so certified by the Lee l <br />County Board of Elections. All of the Commissioners assembled in the District <br />Courtroom at the Lee County Courthouse where the Honorable William I. Godwin, <br />Judge of the District Court Division of the General Court of Justice was presiding. <br />Commissioners William H. Cooper, J. Eugene Rogers and Franklin D. Wicker <br />took the prescribed oaths and the originals were filed with the Clerk of the Superior <br />Court. Following their qualification, the Commissioners remained in the Court- <br />room to induct the other County Officials into office. <br />Mr. Sion H. Kelly was presented to the Court and took the prescribed <br />oaths and duly qualified for the office of Clerk of the Superior Court for a four <br />year term. <br />Mr. D. F. Holder was presented to the Court and took the prescribed <br />oaths and duly qualified for the office of Sheriff of Lee County for a four year <br />term. <br />Mr. James C. Haire was presented to the Court and took the prescribed <br />oaths and duly qualified for the office of Constable for East Sanford Township, <br />Lee County, for a term of 24 days since the office has been abolished, effective on <br />January 1, 1971. <br />Mrs. Frances Alcaras and Messrs. Johnny Miller, Basil Byerly, <br />H. C. Mason and J. Wayne Godfrey, having been appointed Magistrates by His <br />Honor Harry E. Canady, Resident Superior Court Judge, they were presented <br />to the Court and took the prescribed oaths for their office . <br />The appointees for the office of Deputy Sheriff were presented to the <br />Court and took the prescribed oath and qualified as Deputy Sheriffs. <br />Following the induction ceremony, the Commissioners went to the,: - <br />Commissioners Room of the County Office Building at the corner of Steele aiid <br />Wicker Streets, Sanford, North Carolina. The register of Deeds, J. Chandler <br />Eakes, who is ex officio Clerk to the Board called the meeting to order. All <br />of the Commissioners were present. Mr. Eakes stated he would conduct an <br />election for Chairman of the Board. . While ballots were being distributed, <br />Commissioner Gordon A.. Wicker moved the election of Commissioner Franklin <br />E. Wicker as Chairman and Commissioner William H. Cooper as Vice-Chairman <br />for the ensuing year. Commissioner Perry White seconded the motion and upon <br />a vote it was unanimously adopted, <br />Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker assumed the Chair and presided <br />over the further deliberations of the Board. <br />The Chairman stated the next order,of business was the selection of a <br />County Attorney. Upon motion made, seconded, and unanimously adopted, it was <br />resolved to appoint K. R. Hoyle as County Attorney and as Clerk to the Board. <br />
