BOOM 7 ?AA*_ <br />MINUTES OF THE ADJOURNED REGULAR <br />MEETING OF THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />FOR LEE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA <br />Monday, May 17, 1971 <br />The adjourned regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners for Lee <br />County, North Carolina, convened in the Commissioners` room of the County Office <br />Building in Sanford, North Carolina, at 9:30 A. M., in accordance with the motion <br />of adjournment. The meeting was called to order by the Chairman, and upon roll <br />call, those present and absent were as follows: <br />Present: Chairman Franklin D. Wicker <br />Commissioner <br />William H. Cooper <br />Commissioner <br />J. Eugene Rogers <br />Commissioner <br />Perry White <br />Commissioner <br />Gordon A. Wicker <br />Absent: None <br />Chairman Franklin D. Wicker declared a quorum present and the <br />meeting opened for the transaction of business. The following business was trans- <br />acted: <br />. Rev., R.. W. Ponder of the Steele Street United Methodist Church opened <br />the meeting with a prayer. <br />Minutes of the meetings held on April 19th and May 3rd were approved <br />and ordered recorded. <br />Dr. John E. Dotterer, Chaiiman~, of the Board of Trustees of the Lee <br />County Library, appeared before the Board and advised the Board that an anonymous <br />donor had made an offer to contribute approximately $250, 000 for the construction <br />of a new principal library building. Dr. Dotterer stated that the donor hoped that his <br />gift would serve as an inspiration to others and to the governmental authorities and <br />that this gift would defray approximately one-half of the cost of the building and <br />furnishings and that the donor had approved both the present site as well as the site <br />owned by the Friends of the Library. The Board instructed Dr. Dotterer to advise <br />the donor they would accept-the gift and to convey their appreciation for his generosity <br />and interest in the citizens of Lee County. <br />Dr. Mary Margaret McLeod, Mr.. Sion H. Kelly and Mr. Rex McLeod, <br />members of the Youth Development Commission appeared before the Board and <br />advised them that the plans for implementing their programs were developing and <br />that the Commission had obtained a grant through the State Law and Order Committee. <br />The Commission requested and received approval to use the County Accountant's <br />services for receiving and disbursing of funds, and permission to use office space on the <br />4th floor of the County Office Building. The Commission advised the Board that they <br />had hired a Director who would begin his work on July 1, 1971, and that they would. <br />need a lease on the property the County,is to acquire from the County School` known <br />as the "New Hope" School.. <br />Mr. Sion H. Kelly, Clerk of Superior Court, appeared before the Board <br />and requested that the Board make its appointment to the Lee County Jury Commission. <br />Commissioner; Gordon A. Wicker moved that Mr. Oscar A. Keller, Jr. be re- <br />appointed to the Lee County Jury Commission to serve a term commencing <br />on. the first Monday in June, 1971, and to continue until the first Monday in June, 1973, <br />
