JUNE 27TH, 1972 <br />MINUTES OF THE ADJOURNED REGULAR <br />TING OF THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />FOR LEE COUNTY. NORTH CAROLINA <br />The adjourned regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners <br />for the County of Lee, convened in the Commnissioners' Room in the County <br />Office Building in Sanford, North Carolina, at 9:30 o'clock a. m. , in accordance <br />with the motion of adjournment. Those present were Commissioners William H. <br />Cooper, J. Eugene Rogers, Perry White, Gordon A. Wicker and Chairman <br />Franklin D. Wicker. <br />Chairman Franklin D. Wicker, presided and the following business <br />was transacted: <br />The minutes of the adjourned meetings held on May 15 and 16, and <br />the regular meeting held on June 5, were approved and ordered recorded, upon <br />motion of Commissioner Cooper, seconded by Commissioner White and unanimously <br />adopted. <br />The petition requesting the addition of the extension of Industrial <br />Drive in Jonesboro Township to provide an access to the City of Sanford's sewer- <br />age disposal plant, was presented to the Board and considered. Commissioner <br />Cooper-moved the adoption of the following resolution: <br />WHEREAS, the attached petition has been filed <br />with the Board of County Commissioners of the County <br />of Lee, requesting. that the above described road, the <br />location of which has been indicated in red on the attach- <br />ed map,' be added to the Secondary Road System; and. <br />WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners is <br />of the opinion that the above described road should be added <br />to the_ Secondary Road System, if the road meets minimum <br />standards and criteria established by the State Highway <br />Commission for the addition of roads to the System. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Board of <br />County Commissioners of the County of Lee, that the State <br />Highway Commission is hereby requested to review the above <br />described road, and to take over the road for maintenance if <br />it meets established standards and criteria. <br />Commissioner Rogers seconded the motion and upon. a vote it <br />was unanimously adopted. <br />w <br />Mr. W. Williams appeared before the Board and presented <br />petitions said to contain approximately 1800 names requesting that the Board <br />of Commissioners not hire a County Manager and to submit the matter to a <br />vote of the people. Chairman Wicker thanked him for his interest in County <br />Government and assured him the petitions would be given consideration by the <br />members of the Board, although there was no legal machinery for holding the <br />type of election as was requested in the petition. Chairman Wicker stated to <br />the Board he thought there was considerable opposition to the appointment and <br />to the salary and that the people wanted a hearing. Commissioner Cooper pre- <br />sented a letter received from Mr. C. M. Reaves, Jr. , in support of the appoint- <br />ment of a County Manager which was read by Chairman Wicker to the Board. <br />Commissioner Cooper invited Mr. Williams to return at 11:00 o'clock when <br />other persons in support of the appointment would be present. <br />
