POLICY: 09 -10 <br />DATE: 06 -01 -2012 <br />REVISION DATE: 02 -13 -13 <br />TITLE PAGE: Retiring Deputies Request for Office <br />Issued Side Arm and Badge <br />PAGE: 1 of 2 <br />RESPONSIBLE AUTHORITY: Sheriff <br />REFERENCES: <br />GENERAL PURPOSE: The purpose of this policy is to establish in writing the <br />conditions under which a retiring deputy sheriff or one who suffers death in the line of <br />duty, while a deputy sheriff of this Office shall have the right to be awarded his or her <br />badge and service side arm. <br />POLICY: The policy of this Office is the public policy of this State as previously <br />established by the North Carolina General Assembly in NCGS 20- 187.2, Badges <br />and service side arms of deceased or retiring members of State, city and county <br />law - enforcement agencies; weapons of active members. <br />SPECIFIC PROCEDURES: <br />A. The policy of this Office is as follows: <br />1. Upon retirement and by a written request, a deputy sheriff shall be presented, at <br />no cost to the deputy, with his/her badge. In order to be eligible for this tribute, a <br />retiring deputy must have served for ten years as a deputy with this Office. This <br />tribute is authorized by the previously stated statute. <br />2. Upon retirement and by written request, a deputy sheriff shall be presented, at a <br />ten dollar cost to the deputy, with his/her service sidearm. In order to be eligible <br />for this tribute, a retiring deputy must have served for ten years as a deputy with <br />this Office. This tribute is authorized by the previously stated statute. <br />3. If a deputy sheriff is killed in the line of duty, the Sheriff shall upon written <br />request present to the deceased deputy's spouse, or if there is no surviving spouse, <br />to the children of said deputy, his/her badge at no cost to the family. This tribute <br />is authorized by the previously stated statute. <br />4. If a deputy sheriff is killed in the line of duty, the Sheriff shall upon written <br />request present to the deceased deputy's spouse, or if there is no surviving spouse, <br />to the children of said deputy, his/her service side arm at no cost to the family or <br />child. This tribute is authorized by the previously stated statute. The person who <br />receives the service side arm must either be a sworn law enforcement officer or <br />have, as required by statute, a pistol purchase permit issued by the Sheriff of the <br />county wherein the spouse or child resides.
