BOOK 9 rn 25 <br />Commissioner Jack D. Funderburke joined the meeting and <br />participated in the further deliberations of the Board. <br />Mr. James Coats, Director of the County Department of <br />Social Services and his Administrative Assistant, Miss Lura McDonald, <br />appeared before the Board to review the budget request for the Department <br />of Social Services. The Board made an increase in General Assistance from <br />$1, 000. 00 to $5, 000. 00 and reductions as follows: AFDC from $101, 557. 00 <br />to $80, 000. 00; Staff and Program Operations from $259, 745. 00 to $229, 745. 00; <br />Legal Services from $4, 926. 00 to $1, 926. 00; and Medicaid from $186, 760. 00 to <br />$140, 000. 00. Commissioner Funderburke moved that the budget as reduced to <br />a total of $552, 745. 00 be given tentative approval. Commissioner Nielsen sec- <br />onded the motion and upon a roll call vote, Commissioners Funderburke, Rhyne, <br />Nielsen, Wicker and Harmon voted for it and no one voted against it. <br />Commissioner Wicker moved that budget requests for County funds <br />in the amount of $6, 644. 00 for Vocational Rehabilitation and $4, 967. 00 for Aid to <br />the Blind be given tentative approval. Commissioner Nielsen seconded the motion <br />and upon a roll call vote, Commissioners Funderburke, Rhyne, Nielsen, Wicker <br />and Harmon voted for it and no one voted against it. <br />Mrs. Alice B. Griffin, RSVP Director, appeared before the Board <br />and requested authority to file an application to get a grant to establish a Lee <br />County Community Involvement Council and prepare a publication setting forth the <br />available services in the County. Commissioner Rhyne moved that the Board <br />approve the request to apply for the grant provided that no County funds are <br />involved in said program. Commissioner Nielsen seconded the motion and upon <br />a vote it was unanimously adopted. <br />Mrs. Beatrice Fields, County Finance Officer, appeared before <br />the Board and reported on the information obtained concerning the possibility of <br />securing a private firm to operate the sanitary landfill. <br />Commissioner Rhyne moved that the Board designate the month of <br />May as Senior Citizens Month and the Chairman be authorized to issue a procla- <br />mation to that effect. Commissioner Wicker seconded the motion and upon a vote <br />it was unanimously adopted. <br />Commissioner Nielsen moved that the week of May 20 through 26, <br />be designated as Carolina Brick Week and the Chairman be authorized to issue <br />a proclamation to that effect. Commissioner Funderburke seconded the motion <br />and upon a vote it was unanimously adopted. <br />The letter from the County Finance Officer of Duplin County, <br />inviting the Board to attend the ceremonies celebrating the opening of the new <br />Court facilities building in Duplin County, was read to the Board. <br />The Chairman brought up for discussion the adequacy of the quarters' <br />provided for the Sheriff's Department. <br />Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker read a report on the condition <br />of the roof on the Armory building on McIver Street occupied by the Recreation <br />Department. Commissioner Wicker expressed the opinion that repairs would <br />have to be made before winter. <br />Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker brought up for discussion the <br />budget request for the Recreation Department and asked the other members of the <br />Board for guidance in keeping the request within acceptable limits. <br />
