BOOK 9 rn 25 Commissioner Jack D. Funderburke joined the meeting and participated in the further deliberations of the Board. Mr. James Coats, Director of the County Department of Social Services and his Administrative Assistant, Miss Lura McDonald, appeared before the Board to review the budget request for the Department of Social Services. The Board made an increase in General Assistance from $1, 000. 00 to $5, 000. 00 and reductions as follows: AFDC from $101, 557. 00 to $80, 000. 00; Staff and Program Operations from $259, 745. 00 to $229, 745. 00; Legal Services from $4, 926. 00 to $1, 926. 00; and Medicaid from $186, 760. 00 to $140, 000. 00. Commissioner Funderburke moved that the budget as reduced to a total of $552, 745. 00 be given tentative approval. Commissioner Nielsen sec- onded the motion and upon a roll call vote, Commissioners Funderburke, Rhyne, Nielsen, Wicker and Harmon voted for it and no one voted against it. Commissioner Wicker moved that budget requests for County funds in the amount of $6, 644. 00 for Vocational Rehabilitation and $4, 967. 00 for Aid to the Blind be given tentative approval. Commissioner Nielsen seconded the motion and upon a roll call vote, Commissioners Funderburke, Rhyne, Nielsen, Wicker and Harmon voted for it and no one voted against it. Mrs. Alice B. Griffin, RSVP Director, appeared before the Board and requested authority to file an application to get a grant to establish a Lee County Community Involvement Council and prepare a publication setting forth the available services in the County. Commissioner Rhyne moved that the Board approve the request to apply for the grant provided that no County funds are involved in said program. Commissioner Nielsen seconded the motion and upon a vote it was unanimously adopted. Mrs. Beatrice Fields, County Finance Officer, appeared before the Board and reported on the information obtained concerning the possibility of securing a private firm to operate the sanitary landfill. Commissioner Rhyne moved that the Board designate the month of May as Senior Citizens Month and the Chairman be authorized to issue a procla- mation to that effect. Commissioner Wicker seconded the motion and upon a vote it was unanimously adopted. Commissioner Nielsen moved that the week of May 20 through 26, be designated as Carolina Brick Week and the Chairman be authorized to issue a proclamation to that effect. Commissioner Funderburke seconded the motion and upon a vote it was unanimously adopted. The letter from the County Finance Officer of Duplin County, inviting the Board to attend the ceremonies celebrating the opening of the new Court facilities building in Duplin County, was read to the Board. The Chairman brought up for discussion the adequacy of the quarters' provided for the Sheriff's Department. Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker read a report on the condition of the roof on the Armory building on McIver Street occupied by the Recreation Department. Commissioner Wicker expressed the opinion that repairs would have to be made before winter. Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker brought up for discussion the budget request for the Recreation Department and asked the other members of the Board for guidance in keeping the request within acceptable limits.
