0 0 <br />BOOK 21 PAGE 360 <br />PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND CONTRACT <br />ENDOR IRON FURNACE ARCHAEOLOGY SURVEY - TRANSPORTATION <br />FEATURES <br />Funded in part by <br />North Carolina Department of Transportation Enhancement Agreement (Project E-4947) <br />This Project Description and Contract ("Contract') is hereby entered into by and <br />between Lee County Government (the "Grantee") and Wake Forest University (the <br />"Consultant'), referred to collectively as the "Parties." <br />A. PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE OF WORK: <br />The purpose of this investigation is to document archaeologically the historic <br />transportation features associated with the Endor Iron Furnace property <br />(31 LE146' a National Register property which encompasses approximately <br />426 acres located adjacent to the Deep River in Lee County, and to use this <br />information to prepare a historic context demonstrating the importance of <br />transportation features as they relate to Endor and its associated industrial <br />components. <br />The Consultant will locate, map, and record archaeologically all industrial roads <br />and trails directly associated with the iron furnace site, the network of roads and <br />trails surrounding the ironworks, transportation links with major regional roads <br />and railroads, and river transportation features such as landings, locks, and <br />dams. The Consultant shall conduct library, literature, historic records, and <br />cartographic research to assist in the identification of any extant historic <br />roadways, railroads, and other transportation features. The Consultant shall give <br />priority to the field identification and documentation of historic transportation <br />features by utilizing an intensive pedestrian archaeological survey. The <br />Consultant shall document all road traces and assess each road segment to <br />determine if it is historic or of recent (non-historic) origin. The Consultant shall <br />record the locations of other archaeological features that are found near historic <br />roads and assess their historical potential. Assessments will not include <br />extensive archaeological excavation unless the features are transportation <br />related features. <br />The Consultant shall conduct the inventory and evaluation of archaeological <br />resources in accordance with criteria and procedures established for the National <br />
