BOOK '42 PAGE 933 <br />North Carolina 4-H <br />Centennial Proclamation <br />WHEREAS, the 4-H program began in North Carolina with the founding of boys' corn clubs in 19og <br />in Hertford County under agent I.O. Schaub, whereby boys learned how to use improved production <br />methods to grow corn on their farm; and <br />WHEREAS, girls were introduced into 4-H through tomato clubs in 1912, under the direction of Jane <br />S. McKimmon, whereby the girls' tomato clubs inspired interest in home activities and the sale of <br />canned tomatoes brought in extra money; and <br />WHEREAS, African American boys' and girls' 4-H programs in North Carolina were desegregated in <br />1965 and was administered through North Carolina A & T State University, whereby boys and girls <br />learned how to grow vegetable gardens and poultry to supplement their family diets; and <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina 4-H Youth Development program that we know today evolved out of <br />these and other programs with the motto, "To Make The Best Better" through the wise and effective <br />use of the four "H's," representing Head, Heart, Hands and Health; and <br />WHEREAS, North Carolina 4-H members and their families have made many worthwhile <br />contributions to the citizens of North Carolina and this nation; and, <br />WHEREAS, through its ioo years of existence in North Carolina, the North Carolina 4-H Youth <br />Development program has reached more than 1.5 million girls and boys with educational and <br />developmental programs that have contributed significantly to the quality of life for these young <br />people and their families; <br />WHEREAS, there are 248,ooo youth currently enrolled in North Carolina 4-H and more than 20,000 <br />adult and teen volunteers whom make the program possible; <br />THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that 2oo9 be designated as the Centennial Anniversary of 4-H in <br />North Carolina and that the North Carolina 4-H Youth Development program be recognized and <br />commended for its ioo years of helping youth develop a passion for lifelong learning, valuable <br />leadership skills, self-confidence and service to the people of this State and Lee County. <br />Slate University <br />Richard B.
