County Manager John Crumpton stated a bill now in committee in the NC
Senate would move Lee County into a new economic region based around Charlotte.
Currently Lee County is placed with the Raleigh- Durham region and the Triangle J Council of
Governments and the Research Triangle Regional Partnership. Senate Bill
127 must pass the Senate and House, and then be approved by the Governor. Mr. Crumpton
presented a Resolution opposing the move to be placed in a region where the Major
Metropolitan area is Mecklenburg County, two and a half hours away from Lee County, when
the Raleigh Metropolitan area is now 30 minutes away. Commissioner Womack stated he
didn't think it was a bad idea; thinks it might be better since Lee County is in the southern end
of the Raleigh region now. He further stated he didn't think Lee County would lose anything
and we might actually gain something. Commissioner Womack stated he opposed the
resolution and thinks we should try something new. Commissioner Smith stated there have
been many changes in Raleigh since the November election. Mr. Crumpton stated that Anson
and Montgomery counties have opted out of the Charlotte region and are now on their own.
Commissioner Reives stated he wanted Lee County to stay in the Research Triangle Region
with Wake and Durham counties. Currently Lee County works with the Aberdeen DOT office
and if the change is approved we will be working out of the Albemarle location — over an hour
from Lee County. Commissioner Womack stated the Board might want to wait until the April 1St
meeting to resolve the matter and talk with the local DOT representatives, local citizens, and
surrounding counties that will be affected with the change to get their feedback. After further
discussion, Commissioner Womack moved to defer action on the matter until the April 1, 2013
meeting and get additional information.
