BK:00025 PG - 0362
L EE COUNTY
Committed Today for a Better Tomorrow
February 18, 2013
Mr. Crag Smith, Chief
Certificate of Need Section
North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation
701 Barbour Drive
Raleigh NC 27603
Re: Central Carolina Hospital
CON Application for Expansion of Emergency Department
March 1. 2013 Review Period
Dear Mr. Smith:
The population of Lee County has grown and developed over the past few years. This increase has
been due both to natural increase and the addition of out of state citizens relocating due to employment
opportunities or retirement living. Schools, a first rate community college, a modem public library
system, civic and literary clubs, theaters, golf courses and other amusements support a lively cultural
and civic life among county residents. Not only does Lee County produce a variety of products, its
population with the influx of residents has taken a cosmopolitan turn.
Central Carolina Hospital (CCH) has informed the Lee County Board of Commissioners about their
proposed expansion of the Emergency Department. The Emergency Department at the hospital serves
residents of Lee County as well as residents from several surrounding counties. Since 2008,
emergency visits at CCH have increased over 20% and in the last 2 years volumes have exceeded
industry standards regarding the utilization of emergency treatment rooms. It is our understanding that
the Central Carolina Hospital Emergency Department is operating at capacity and is in need of
expansion. As a result, patient wait times have increased over the last several years. The proposed
Emergency Department expansion is necessary to meet the needs of our community.
Please convey to the Certificate of Need Section at the North Carolina Division of Health Service
Regulations, the approval and support of the Lee County Board of Commissioners for CCH and their
commitment to continuing to meet the medical needs of the community.
Sincerely,
Charles T. Parks, Chairman
Lee County Board of Commissioners
/gl
OFFICE OF THE COUNTY MANAGER
P. O.
