BOOK 21 PAGE <br />0 Department of Labor are due to the State on March 19, 2007. This round of <br />WIRED is a $65 million program and regions selected for these grants will <br />receive $5 million over a three-year period to help transform their economies. <br />Mr. Paschal and County Manager David Smitherman stated the grants are used <br />to integrate workforce development, economic development and education at the <br />regional level. The goal is to transform economies by expanding employment and <br />advancement opportunities for workers and to catalyze the creation of high-skill <br />and high-wage opportunities in regional economies. Concerns were expressed <br />by various members over the short notice and exactly what Lee County would <br />receive from the grant. After much discussion, Commissioner Paschal moved to <br />approve the matching grant of $7,000.00 to hire a firm to prepare a competitive <br />grant application for the Department of Labor. Upon a vote, the results were as <br />follows: <br />Aye: Brown, Kelly, Lemmond, Paschal, Reives, and Stevens <br />Nay: Shook <br />The Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted by a six to one vote. <br />The Board asked Strategic Initiatives Director Lesa Price to provide <br />information regarding the scope of the grant project to Commissioners as soon <br />as possible. <br />Finance Director Lisa Minter gave the Board a power-point presentation <br />on the Capital Improvements Program (CIP) for 2008-2012. A public hearing in <br />reference to the CIP will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, March 19, 2007. The <br />Board will hold a work session immediately following the public hearing. <br />Chairman Brown stated that the Central Carolina Community College <br />Board of Trustees wishes to hold a joint meeting with Commissioners at the old <br />Jonesboro School at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2007. Various <br />Commissioners stated they would not be able to attend so Chairman Brown <br />stated he would work with Dr. Garrett on scheduling another date and time. <br />Chairman Brown stated a tour of Lee County High School would be held <br />at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 27, 2007. Commissioners interested in touring <br />the facility are to be at the high school on the above date and time. <br />With no further business to come before the Board, Commissioner <br />Paschal moved to adjourn the work session.
