BOOK 21 PAGE
0 Department of Labor are due to the State on March 19, 2007. This round of
WIRED is a $65 million program and regions selected for these grants will
receive $5 million over a three-year period to help transform their economies.
Mr. Paschal and County Manager David Smitherman stated the grants are used
to integrate workforce development, economic development and education at the
regional level. The goal is to transform economies by expanding employment and
advancement opportunities for workers and to catalyze the creation of high-skill
and high-wage opportunities in regional economies. Concerns were expressed
by various members over the short notice and exactly what Lee County would
receive from the grant. After much discussion, Commissioner Paschal moved to
approve the matching grant of $7,000.00 to hire a firm to prepare a competitive
grant application for the Department of Labor. Upon a vote, the results were as
follows:
Aye: Brown, Kelly, Lemmond, Paschal, Reives, and Stevens
Nay: Shook
The Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted by a six to one vote.
The Board asked Strategic Initiatives Director Lesa Price to provide
information regarding the scope of the grant project to Commissioners as soon
as possible.
Finance Director Lisa Minter gave the Board a power-point presentation
on the Capital Improvements Program (CIP) for 2008-2012. A public hearing in
reference to the CIP will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, March 19, 2007. The
Board will hold a work session immediately following the public hearing.
Chairman Brown stated that the Central Carolina Community College
Board of Trustees wishes to hold a joint meeting with Commissioners at the old
Jonesboro School at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2007. Various
Commissioners stated they would not be able to attend so Chairman Brown
stated he would work with Dr. Garrett on scheduling another date and time.
Chairman Brown stated a tour of Lee County High School would be held
at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 27, 2007. Commissioners interested in touring
the facility are to be at the high school on the above date and time.
With no further business to come before the Board, Commissioner
Paschal moved to adjourn the work session.
