BK - 00025 PG <br />Aye: Dalrymple, Frazier, Knecht, Parks, and Smith <br />Nay: None <br />Absent: Reives and Womack <br />The Chairman ruled the motion had been adopted unanimously. <br />No one present signed up to speak during the Public Comments section of the meeting. <br />The Board considered a special appropriation and budget amendment from the Lee County <br />Schools for security equipment. County Manager John Crumpton presented the School's request for <br />security equipment due to the December Newtown, Connecticut, shootings. Action on this item had <br />been deferred at the January 7 th meeting until a select group of Commissioners, School Board staff and <br />Sheriff Tracy Carter could meet to discuss school safety issues. Mr. Crumpton stated 3 bids had been <br />received by the Lee County Schools and Superintendent Jeff Moss was asking Commissioners for an <br />appropriation of $212,000 to proceed with security equipment for all schools except Lee Senior High <br />School. After discussion, Commissioner Dalrymple moved to approve the $212,000 appropriation to <br />the Lee County Schools for school security equipment and Budget Amendment # 01/22/13/10 showing <br />funds would come from Fund Balance, a copy of which is attached to these minutes and by this <br />reference made a part hereof. Social Services Director Brenda Potts stated the Food & <br />Nutrition Unit has reached a point that clients cannot be served timely, State processing time standards <br />are not being met, no quality control reviews are being completed, and customer service is at an all - <br />time low. Extensive overtime is not helping with the issues stated above. A position has been <br />requested for the last several years in the budget but has not been approved. The department has <br />reached a critical point where they can no longer operate the program without additional staff and <br />resources. Ms. Potts stated she was also concerned for the health and safety of her staff who have <br />suffered stress from verbal abuse from clients. The request presented included the hiring of 1 new full - <br />time permanent Income Maintenance Casework II position and 3 temporary Income Maintenance <br />Caseworker -Tech positions for approximately 4 months. Budget figures were presented and discussed. <br />After discussion, Commissioner Frazier moved to approve the request to hire 1 full -time permanent <br />Income Maintenance Caseworker II position in the Food & Nutrition Unit, and the hiring of 3 full -time <br />temporary positions, for approximately 4 months, to work on the NC Fast Conversion Program. Governors <br />Crime Commission Grants. Lt. David Prevatte asked for permission to submit pre - applications for two <br />separate applications for funding with the N.C. Governors Crime Commission.
