:\T IMi <br /> di <br /> PROCLAMATION HONORING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH <br /> WHEREAS, National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide from September 15`h <br /> through October 15`h each year. The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under <br /> President Lyndon B. Johnson and expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover the <br /> month as it is celebrated today. It calls upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the <br /> people of the United States to observe this time with ceremonies, activities, and programs; and <br /> WHEREAS,since the 16`h Century,North Carolina saw Spanish Explorers by the names of Lucas <br /> Vasques de Ayilon, Hernando de Soto, Domingo Fernandez, Pedro de Coronas, Captain Juan <br /> Pardo, and Sergeant Hernando Boyano, leaving a long Hispanic legacy on our state, and <br /> WHEREAS, September 15`h is significant because it is the anniversary of the independence of <br /> Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala,Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Brazil,Mexico,Chile, <br /> Belize, celebrate their Independence Days on September 7th, 16th, 18`', and 21 sc respectively. <br /> Therefore, the observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the culture and <br /> traditions of people whose ancestry can be traced to Spain, Mexico, Central America, South <br /> America, and the Caribbean islands; and <br /> WHEREAS, during 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau counted 13,122 Hispanic residents in Lee <br /> County out of population of 63,285 people, or about 20.7% of the county's residents identified as <br /> Hispanic/Latino; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lee County recognizes the unique and vital role our Hispanic and Latino residents <br /> play in the fabric of our economy and workforce, as well as our faith communities and social <br /> tapestry; and <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lee County Board of Commissioners <br /> hereby proclaims September 15`h through October 15th as Hispanic Heritage Month in Lee County <br /> and urges its residents to enjoy this cultural celebration. <br /> Presented this 2 1"day of August, 2023. <br /> A <br /> Kirk D.
