0 6ou 22 m~,E 366 <br />EE COUNTY <br />Committed Today for a Better Tomorrow <br />MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL JOINT MEETING <br />OF THE <br />LEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />FOR THE <br />COUNTY OF LEE. STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA <br />SEPTEMBER 2, 2008 <br />A special meeting between the Lee County Board of Commissioners for the County of <br />Lee, State of North Carolina, and the Lee County Board of Education, was held at 1:00 p.m. on <br />this date in the Assembly Room, Heins Education Building, 106 Gordon Street, Sanford, North <br />Carolina. Commissioners present were James C. Kelly, Jerry M. Lemmond, Nathan E. Paschal, <br />and John T. Quiggle. Commissioners Robert H. Brown, Robert T. Reives, and Linda A. Shook <br />were absent. Other staff in attendance included County Manager John Crumpton, County <br />Attorney K. R. Hoyle, and Clerk to the Board Gaynell Lee. <br />Mr. Frank Thompson, Vice-Chairman of the Lee County Board of Education welcomed <br />everyone to the meeting. <br />The purpose of the meeting was to meet with Congressman Bob Etheridge and discuss <br />the rising cost of fuel as it relates to schools. Congressman Etheridge stated that currently 70% <br />of the fuel is purchased from oversees and the country needs to start looking for fuel alternatives. <br />Sky-rocketing energy prices are impacting North Carolina's economy. He stated we must start <br />investing in long-term strategies to reduce dependence on foreign oil, and Congress must also <br />take steps to stabilize prices in the short run. As a member of the House Budget Committee, <br />Congressman Etheridge has been working on a bipartisan basis to pass responsible legislation to <br />respond to worsening economic conditions. <br />Reid Cagle, Lee County Schools Transportation Director stated he requested an additional <br />$120,000 in this year's budget just to cover fuel for the yellow buses. They are currently using a <br />little over 1,000 gallons a day of gas for the buses alone. <br />A question and answer session followed Congressman Etheridge's presentation. <br />The meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m. <br />~W~) <br />Jerry M.
