D. <br />XX Information <br />Meeting Date: November 5, 2012 Action Item <br />Consent Agenda <br />SUBJECT Progress Energy Proposed Rate Increase in North Carolina <br />DEPARTMENT Administration <br />CONTACT PERSON John Crumpton <br />REQUEST Review Progress Energy proposed Rate Increase request to the <br />North Carolina Utilities Commission. Consider taking a position as a Board with regards to the <br />proposed increase. <br />SUMMARY Progress Energy has notified Lee County that they will be <br />presenting an average price increase request to the Utilities Commission of 11 percent. The rate <br />increase request hits households and small business the hardest. The residential rate increase is <br />14 percent and the increase to small business is 11.6 percent. Counties in the Duke Energy <br />region were successful in getting a proposed rate increase in their area reduced two years ago by <br />opposing the rate increase to the Utilities Commission. <br />BUDGET IMPACT County Budget Impact is estimated at $43,340 per year. <br />ATTACHMENT(S) Email from Progress Energy outlining the rate increase to the <br />Utilities Commission. <br />PUBLIC HEARING No <br />PRIOR BOARD ACTION N/A <br />RECOMMENDATION Direct staff to develop a Board Resolution opposing the proposed <br />Progress Energy rate increase. <br />
