EE COUNTY
rd ooQa ao000,a Ma
Committed Today for a Better Tomorrow
LEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ITEM ABSTRACT ITEM NO. VI. D.
Information
Meeting Date: October 15, 2012 XX Action Item
Consent Agenda
SUBJECT Fire Hydrant at Hwy 42 and Buckhorn Road
DEPARTMENT Commissioners
CONTACT PERSON Commissioner Charlie Parks /Donald Andrews
REQUEST Consider request to place Fire Hydrant near the intersection of Hwy
42 and Buckhorn Road
SUMMARY In August of this year we were notified by Mayor Donald Andrews
about an issue involving the placement of a fire hydrant at the intersection of Hwy 42 and
Buckhorn Road. It was communicated to us that promises may have been made when the County
was in the water business or when the Cape Fear Fire Department obtained property in this area
that a fire hydrant would be placed near this intersection. Through discussions with Chairman
Shook, Vice Chairman Parks and Mayor Andrews (representing Cape Fear Fire Department), the
County was asked to look into the situation and get an estimate from the City for the installation of
the hydrant. County staff was not able to find any records that showed a commitment from the
County to install this fire hydrant. Attached you will find the estimate for the installation. The
County does not have a policy for installing fire hydrants. The City does not install fire hydrants on
old lines in the County unless a property owner(s) pay for the installation. When new lines are
installed, such as North Plank Road, the cost of fire hydrant installation is considered during the
design of the new line. If the County requests the installation of the hydrant the City of Sanford will
expect the County or someone else to pay for the expense.
BUDGET IMPACT $7,000 to $8,500. The County has closed all water district funds.
ATTACHMENT(S) (1) Map of Location
(2) Cost Estimate from the City of Sanford
PUBLIC HEARING No
PRIOR BOARD ACTION: N/A
RECOMMENDATION Pleasure of the Board.
