vacation, testifying in court, if someone leaves or if there is a serious crime which takes
multiple deputies and extended time on a crime scene. Sheriff Estes said deputies need
more backup, and two were shot this year. Animal control, domestic violence and serving
civil processes are all provided by the Sheriff's Department. There has been a lot of
turnover in the jail. The Department is trying to keep Student Resource Officers at the
schools, but there are times when they are pulled if needed for response to an incident.
When school is out during the summer, they are utilized and sent to training. There are
two Community Resource Officers tied to the park during operational house and could be
utilized in other areas when the parks are closed. The proposed budget is a 11%
increase from the previous year. Adding new a new person also adds the expense of
uniforms and an equipped vehicle, which is estimated at about $100,000 per person. The
Sheriff's Department permits moonlighting for deputies who provide outside services to
places like security to the Charter Schools. Deputies are allowed to use their County-
issued vehicle and uniform for this purpose.
County Staff discussing the joint City/County Departments
County Manager John Crumpton said in Community Development, the requested budget
is $560,574 and considering salary adjustments he felt increase was minimal. The
Inspections department gave an estimate on cost share, but the County hasn't had to
pay the cost share in years. There is no real impact to the department reflected in the
budget. The big increase is for 911 in dispatching for flipping calls to the Sheriff's
Department. Lee County's cost share increased from 24.5% to 29.7% Call volume in
unincorporated areas drove the increase. A new position has been proposed in GIS
Strategic Services, which has not been considered in many years.
ADJOURNMENT
Motion: Motion to adjourn.
