In November of 2012, Lee County Commissioner
Kirk Smith approached 4-H Youth Development Agent Bill Stone with the idea of
addressing a profound lack of understanding young people have regarding the role
that local government plays in their lives along with limited knowledge on how to be a
leader in their community. Fast forward nearly a decade later, and 2021 marked the
eighth year of the Lee County 4-H "Young Commissioners"Program, a successful
and enduring collaboration between N.C. Cooperative Extension and Lee County
Government. Over the duration of the program, and eight cohorts of future leaders,
90% of the 104 participants agreed that 4-H Young Commissioners has greatly
increased their confidence and understanding of what it means to be a leader,
helped them become more aware of issues facing youth in the community, and have
gained a greater insight on the role of county government. Clinton McCrae, South
Central District Director, expressed appreciation to the Board for their partnership
with NC State University. NC is one of the strongest extension systems in the nation.
Commissioner Reives arrived at 6:20 p.m.
3
