Outreach Mission - 6:15 p.m.
Hamer Carter, president of Outreach Mission Inc. submitted a grant request for a new
street outreach program that is being initiated, which starts with a point in time count. 58
sheltered and 91 unsheltered people were found during the most recent point in time
count. OMI has looked at a partnership with H3 to complement each organizations
efforts. H3's efforts are concentrated in medical needs in town and OMI would focus more
on the needs out of town related to housing. There is also a need for transportation for
the homeless. The initial startup budget is $10,000. Immediate needs include supplies
and an inventory list which includes street outreach kits. The van operation would start
operations 2 days per week. Staffing includes 4 volunteers at 10 hours per week, and
data tracking and reporting with an OMI HMIS Specialist at 4 hours per week. OMI is
asking for help with these operating costs. The benefits of the program are to engage
unsheltered homeless in Lee County, provide opportunity for shelter, access to recovery
programs, reduce the need to engage in criminal activity, reduce emergency medical
needs and potentially deaths, and ensure that every person has the basic human needs
to survive. This project is a collaboration that builds on past experience and significantly
expands service availability to the unsheltered.
Lee County Industries - 6:30 p.m.
Mike Gilmore, Executive Director at Lee County Industries, stated there is a unique
quality to LCI because there are individuals who have been there for over 40 years. LCI
fosters an atmosphere of inclusiveness. Audrey Murchison, Director of Career Services
for LCI has been with LCI for 10 years. LCI started 54 years ago in Sanford on Wicker
Street. The organization aims to assist adults with diagnosed Intellectual and
Developmentally Disabilities. 130-140 individuals are served. Service to employment is
the primary purpose. LCI has a program called milestone, as you hit different milestones
in the employment of an individual certain funding is received from the State. The
milestones are not always reached thus other funding sources are needed to supplement
operational costs. LCI has partnerships with companies such as Pfizer to provide
employment opportunities. Pfizer is aiming to incorporate adults who are Intellectual and
Developmentally Disabled to work in every division and are seeking assistance in
employing those individuals through programs such as the one offered by LCI. The
mission is to help people grow and develop independence.
Commissioner Mark Lovick entered the meeting at 6:40 p.m.
Vice Chair Arianna Lavallee called the meeting to order at 6:40 p.m.
2
