Library Building Discussion - Beth List
Library Director Beth List discussed the proposed new library project, which includes
information about the challenges the current library is facing, current facility condition,
and suggestions for the future. The current library is landlocked and does not have space
for future expansion. The original space design was for 3 staff and the current library
staff is over 16 people. The use of the meeting room has increased. Recent updates to
the library include a new children's desk, new children's reading area, which was
donated by the Friends of Lee County Library, exterior artwork in walkway which is on
loan from Jason Morris, new community lounge area, drive up book drop, and a new
circulation desk. Some of the issues the library is facing is limited parking, it is not well
equipped for a library curbside service, the walkway is extremely long from the parking
area which is challenging for disabled patrons, the stacks are narrow and not ADA
compliant, and the shelves are maxed out as demand grows. Technology is also an
issue, which includes safety concerns. Expansion of fiber to the building is needed.
Currently the library only has basic household public wifi which is not capable of handling
the current load. Public feedback was requested and provided for what participants
would like to have equipped in a future library. In the future they would like to see open
community space, a computer lab, a reference help desk, increasing a dedicated teen
and children's area, a community space with study rooms, a staff kitchen and break
room, a drive up service, a black box theater space (multi-functional room), and a books
to go program.
Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update - Dr. John Crumpton
County Manager John Crumpton presented an update on the Parks and Recreation
Master Plan by park. The presentation included illustrations of the various updates
planned at each respective park."The pool at Horton Park has been evaluated. The'
initial opinion is that the existing bathhouse and pool could be used and renovated. The
plan was to create a walk in pool that is more handicap accessible and a mini splashpad
where the kiddi pool was located. The original pool was closed about 11 years ago. At
that time, the Parks and Rec Department did a survey regarding closing the pool and
installing a splash pad and at the time the majority were in support of the plan. There
were not a lot of people using the pool, and there has also been a problem keeping
lifeguards. The Parks and Rec Director would like to contract the pool service out. Also
the Department of Transportation wants to install a traffic circle near Kiwanis Childrens
Park which would take away property from the park. LWCF requires that there be an
equal trade for taking away the property. The City has offered to donate property that is
adjacent to Horton Park. The County Manager informed DOT that the County would
need to be compensated for the loss of the property and the loss of the shelter. LWCF
will need to provide preapproval of the trade. There will be new playground equipment at
Kiwanis Childrens Park. DOT is supposed to get back with the County soon regarding
acquisition of property. At OT Sloan they will be moving of tennis courts and there will
be a tball park.
Final MP Doc Horton_8.5x11_FOR PRINT (1).pdf
Final MP Doc_Kiwanis_8.5x11FOR PRINT (1).pdf
Final MP Doc O.T.
