Public Hearing for Project 1
Economic Development Director Bob Joyce presented a proposed economic
development project referred to as Project 1. Project 1 is a new product expansion for an
existing company in the building products sector. The project proposes an investment of
$7,500,000 in the purchase of machinery and equipment and will create at least 300 jobs
with average wage of$46,500, which is higher than the County's average annual wage.
Lee County is competing with other locations in North Carolina and in Virginia. This is
considered a target industry since it is in the area of advance manufacturing. The project
would supply the home building industry and will pay 50% of employee health benefits.
SAGA recommended a 50% incentive over 5 years which amounts to a proposed
incentive grant of up to $117,335 to be paid by the County. SAGA requested a vote due
to the project's rapid development. The following people spoke in favor of all four project
presented on the agenda:
1.
