VII. COMMISSIONERS COMMENTS
Commissioner Smith asked about what the County's responsibility is for affordable
housing and whether Social Services has received any complaints from citizens who
have lost their jobs and are having trouble paying rent and utility bills. Counties have the
authority to be involved in affordable housing however most Counties have not been
involved because the affordable housing issue is more common in Cities and many Cities
have a housing authority responsible for addressing the issue. Dr. Crumpton stated that
he has a meeting with Brick Capital and plans to discuss the issue of affordable housing.
Dr. Knecht stated that as a representative on the Board of Health there was a concern
expressed about house inspections and the length of time it takes to complete them. The
issue seems to be when the inspection checklist is not entirely completed and the
inspector has to go back out to the site to complete an inspection. The plan is to have a
new more detailed checklist. The Environmental Health Technician position will help
improve customer service. Some of the complaints stemmed from where there were
modifications made to plans. The plan is to decrease the amount of response time and
increase the quality of customer service and the County is working with the City to try to
find some software to work together to consolidate the process and make a true "one
stop shop." Commissioner Del Palazzo stated that the NC Child fatality task force met
last week and one of their goals was to improve firearm safety and implementation of the
suicide prevention strategic plan. Commissioner Reives stated that the reason he
supports affordable housing is because he believes it supports economic development.
Chair Dalrymple reflected on her visit to Pilgrims Pride chicken plant and viewed all of the
safety measures implemented with the preventative precautions taken due to COVID-19.
VIII. CLOSED SESSION
The Chair called for a brief five-minute recess before the start of the closed session.
Commissioner Reives departed the meeting at 7:30 p.m.
VIII.A Closed Session per N.C. General Statute Section 143.318.11(a)(4) to discuss matters
relating to the location or expansion of business.
Motion: Motion to go into Closed Session per N.C.
