Lack of clarity of action to be taken in certain
situations have forced the Ambulance Director and in some cases the
Ambulance Personnel to make decisions that they had no authority to do
under their job descriptions.
In August of 1981, the Lee County Board of Commissioners addressed the
problem and began studying the possibility of establishing a committee
that could formulate draft policies or recommendations of policies that
would be used as a basis for the operation of the Ambulance Service in
its dealings with the public.
The Committee was formed on September 8, 1981 and immediately set to
work dealing with the various problems at hand. On November 16, 1981,
recommendations were presented to the Lee County Board of Commissioners
and the recommendations were adopted during the same meeting. This policy
is a result of those recommendations.
Article III In-Cou
Section 1. In responding to emergency calls, the Lee County Ambulance
Service will transport patients to Central Carolina Hospital Inc.,
Emergency Room subject only to exceptions listed below:
a. On written order of a local physician a patient may be
transported to another hospital within a 75 mile radius.
b. When a patient has immediate need of equipment not readily
available at the local hospital the patient may be transported
to the nearest facility where such equipment is available.
c. On occasions where a particular medical specialty is required
and where such specialty is not readily available to the patient
at the local facility, the patient may be transported to the
nearest facility where such specialty is available.
Section 2. Non-Emergency
a. Non-emergency calls within the county will be handled as second
priority to emergency calls in the same manner as outlined for
emergencies.
b. Non-emergency transfers of a patient directly to a doctor's office may
be made on request of the physician only in such cases that the patient's
physical condition (i.e., traction or splint) would render
transportation by car extremely difficult.
