0 0 <br />BOOK 11 Pg[ 102 <br />RESOLUTION SUPPORTING HOUSE BILL 426 <br />WHEREAS, county governments face persistent and growing public <br />opposition to increases in property taxes; and <br />WHEREAS, counties are required by State law to provide a wide <br />range of services which must be supported with county revenue; and <br />WHEREAS, the County of Lee must provide financing for a number <br />of very important public facility projects which include schools, office <br />facilities, landfill equipment and waterlines, which will require Twenty <br />Million ($20,000,000) Dollars during the next 10 years; and <br />WHEREAS, House Bill 426 has been introduced by Representative <br />Vernon James, and co-sponsored by Representatives Enloe, Evans, C. Hughes, <br />Keesee-Forrester, Seymour and Tyson and would increase the State sales <br />tax by 1¢; and <br />WHEREAS, House Bill 426 would share one-half of these proceeds <br />with local governments; and <br />WHEREAS, House Bill 426 would permit local officials to choose <br />the most appropriate use of these shared revenues based on local needs <br />and conditions; and <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners <br />officially supports passage of House Bill 426; and <br />WHEREAS, the Lee County Board of Commissioners recognizes the <br />regressivity of the sales tax on food; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Lee County Board of <br />Commissioners calls upon the 1983 Session of the General Assembly to <br />pass House Bill 426. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY BE ENCOURAGED <br />TO SEEK REPEAL OF THE SALES TAX ON FOOD. <br />Adopted this 5th day of April, 1983. <br />o n E.
