Procedure for Renaming Roads.
I have received calls from two parties wishing to have the name of the road
they live on changed. In both cases, signs have already been purchased and
erected. It is likely that we will have more of these requests as signs con-
tinue to be erected. Also, as signs are erected and permanent addresses assigned,
the cost and amount of inconvenience associated with such requests will escalate.
G. S. 153-240 requires that "prior to renaming a road,. proper notice must
be given. . . and a public hearing held". I recommend that we establish the
following procedure for renaming roads:
1. Interested parties must petition the Board of Commissioners for such
a change. A $25.00 Petition Fee should accompany the petition to
defray the advertising costs.
2. The petition should contain the existing road name, the proposed name,
and the signatures of as many residents who live on the road as may be
obtained.
3. If the Planning Board and Board of Commissioners agree to the request,
the petitioners would be required to pay for the cost of purchasing
and erecting the new signs.
Please call me if you have questions concerning any of these matters.
NORTH CAROLINA, LEE COUN1Y
znied to registra ion on the c7 .-.........dad
190. at S:,~R_M,

Leonard 0.
