Dennis Wicker, Meigs Golden
and Elbert Price, appeared before the Board on behalf of the Central Carolina
Technical College. President Joyner advised the Board that the College felt
confident it could obtain a grant of $600, 000. 00, from the North Carolina General
Assembly, provided that the funds would be matched by the County, all of which
funds would be used for its construction program. Representatives of the College
urged and requested that the County commit itself to make available $600, 000. 00
as matching funds in order that it might secure the state funds. Commissioner
Jerry M. Almond moved that the Board commit $600, 000. 00 local funds to be
available to the Central Carolina Technical College as a match for state funds.
Commissioner John R. Dossenbach, Jr., seconded the motion and upon a vote
it was unanimously adopted.
The Board next considered Budget Amendments Nos. 13 and 14,
from the Lee County Board of Education. The County Manager explained Budget
Amendment No. 13 did not require approval but had been furnished for information.
However, the Board needed to take action with respect to Budget Amendment No.
14. The matter was discussed and reviewed, following which Commissioner John
R. Dossenbach, Jr. , moved that Budget Amendment No. 14 of the Lee County
Board of Education, a copy of which is attached hereto and by this reference made
a part hereof, be adopted. Commissioner John E. Dotterer seconded the motion
and upon a vote it was unanimously adopted.
The Board next considered the matter of a One-Half Per Cent
(1/2%).Supplemental Local Government Sales and Use Tax and the Clerk, upon
the request of members of the Board, read the draft of a resolution levying a
One-Half Per Cent (1 /27o) Supplemental Local Gov ernment Sales and Use Tax,
which provided for the collection of the tax on and after the 1st day of July. A
copy of the resolution is attached hereto and by this reference made a part hereof.
Commissioner John R. Dossenbach, Jr. , moved that the resolution levying the
tax be adopted. Commissioner Jerry M. Almond seconded the motion. Upon a vote
the resolution was adopted by a majority vote wherein Commissioners Almond,
Dossenbach and Matthews voted for it and Commissioners Dotterer and Wicker
voted against it.
The Board discussed a meeting to work on the budget and it was,
upon motion made, seconded and unanimously adopted, resolved to adjourn the
meeting until May 30, 1984, at 7 o'clock p. m.
There being no further business to come before the session, it
was adjourned in accordance with the resolution.
C H.
