no< 12 : 6s=. 37 <br />R E S O L U T I O N <br />e <br />WHEREAS, Carolina Power and Light Company <br />nuclear power plant and associated facilities in <br />Wake Counties and will soon have the plant in <br />and, <br />has built a <br />Chatham and <br />operation; <br />WHEREAS, the Lee County Board of Commissioners, because <br />of their responsibility for the health and welfare of the <br />county's citizens, has prepared an evacuation plan for nearby <br />citizens in case of an accident or dangerous release of <br />radioactive substances; and <br />WHEREAS, the Lee County Board of Commissioners, acting <br />deliberate manner, has now studied additional information, <br />heard more fully from the public and Carolina Power and Light <br />Company, and consulted with county employees who would be <br />responsible for important parts of the emergency plan; and <br />WHEREAS, as a result of further information provided by <br />those sources, the Commissioners have made certain <br />modifications to the Lee County Plan; and <br />WHEREAS, it is the opinion of the Lee County Board of <br />Commissioners that the evacuation plan as modified will <br />• provide for an adequate and orderly evacuation, of those <br />residents of Lee County residing within a 10-mile radius of <br />the plant; and <br />WHEREAS, there are also numerous vehicles carrying <br />hazardous materials that traverse Lee County on a daily <br />basis; and <br />WHEREAS, these hazards, in addition to those posed by <br />the Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant, are also a source of <br />concern to the Lee County Board of Commissioners; and <br />WHEREAS, an accident involving one or more of these <br />materials could necessitate the evacuation of large portions <br />of Lee County not covered by the Power Plant Evacuation Plan; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the Commissioners are also concerned about <br />evacuation procedures for Lee County and Sanford as a whole; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, an evacuation of Lee County as a whole would <br />involve much intergovernmental cooperation and coordination <br />between various counties that could best be handled at the <br />state level: <br />• NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEE COUNTY BOARD OF <br />COMMISSIONERS: <br />27 <br />
