~ififsr 12 rw,F- 173 <br />6) <br />WHEREAS, on February 2, 1987, the Chatham County <br />Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution in opposition to the <br />proposed mining operations in Chatham County due to the potential <br />adverse effects to the environment which would subsequently become <br />an adverse effect to the people of Chatham County and the State of <br />North Carolina; and <br />WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Lee County Board of <br />Commissioners to cooperate and support its neighboring county <br />in matters that impact the entire area: <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEE <br />COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS that Lee County opposes the <br />proposed mining operation of the Chatham Coal Company because of the <br />potential danger to the Deep River as a future public water supply for <br />the citizens of Lee County. <br />Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker seconded the motion and upon a vote, <br />it was unanimously adopted. The County Manager was directed to furnish copies <br />to the members of the General Assembly from districts embracing Lee County, <br />to the Chatham County Board of Commissioners, and to other public officials <br />concerned with this matter. <br />Commissioner Bertha L. Matthews moved that the Board oppose the <br />placing of a landfill in Alamance County within the vicinity of the Haw River and <br />that the County Manager be authorized to draft a resolution to such effect and <br />that such resolution be attached to and comprise a part of the minutes of this <br />meeting. Commissioner Raymond C. Cox, Jr. seconded the motion and upon <br />a vote it was unanimously adopted. <br />Miss Mary Ellen Bowen, Executive Director of the Downtown Sanford <br />Redevelopment Program, appeared before the Board and gave a report on the <br />status of the program. <br />Mr. Billy Bryant, Sheriff of Lee County, appeared before the Board, and <br />asked that the Board consider raising the daily $5. 00 fee charged at the County <br />Jail for prisoners serving a sentence of from 1 to 29 days. After consideration and <br />discussion, Commissioner John R. Dossenbach, Jr. , moved that the Board raise <br />the daily fee for prisoners serving a sentence of from 1 day to 29 days in the Lee Count <br />Jail to the sum of $10. 00, effective as of April 6, 1987. Commissioner Bertha <br />L. Matthews seconded the motion and upon a vote it was unanimously adopted. <br />Mr. Bobby Johnson, Public Works Director, appeared before the Board <br />and requested authority to advertise for bids for the purchase of a 16 cubic yard <br />scraper for use at the Lee County Landfill. Commissioner Bertha L. Matthews <br />roved that Mr. Johnson be granted such authority. Commissioner Raymond C. <br />Cox, Jr., seconded the motion and upon a vote, it was unanimously adopted. <br />The Board observed a short recess at this time. <br />
