That you
need only to go as far as Raleigh and you can see the growth that is occurring
in our area and what is happening; that the plan sought a balance between growth
and preservation and, therefore, she supports it.
Mr. Tom Poe of Carbonton Road, Sanford, appeared before the
Board and expressed the view that we need to have some plan and the present proposal
is the best that we have. He, however, does not like the word "zoning".
Mrs. Betty Johnson spoke in favor of the adoption of the plan. She
advised the Board that her family owns property in the county and developers have
hurt the use of their property and she thinks the proposal is a workable plan.
Mrs. Joann Godfrey advised the Board she was Mrs. Johnson's sister
and she thanked the Board for its courtesies with respect to the water situation near
the airport and advised the Board that she supported the Land Development Plan.
Mr. Tommy Brooks stated that he had owned a farm for years and
was familiar with the Land Development Plan and there was nothing in the plan
which stopped a farmer from selling his land.
The Board having originally imposed a 3 minute limit on all speakers
afforded the opportunity to speak, that for all who did not get to say all they wished
to state to reappear before the board.
The following persons appeared before the Board in response to this
invitation:
Mr. Edward Harris of Pocket community said he objected to the
regulation and that the plan would push poor people out of Lee County.
Mr. Bobby Hall stated that the Board should screen junk yards but that
people had to have parts for their cars ; that the city has enough authority in this
area; that zoning should be dropped.
Mr. Frank Barringer advised the Board in his opinion farmers could sell
their property; that the mobile home regulation may be too restrictive and concern
should be given to uncontrol.
Mr. Leonard Barefoot, County Planner, appeared to advise that under the
law property could not be zoned solely for agricultural purposes.
Mr. Van Croce, developer, says that the present Land Development
Plan does not accomplish anything.
Mr. Harold Granger spoke again in opposition to the plan.
