Mr. Patterson, who is interested <br />in the coal mining operations in Chatham County, accused the Board of having a <br />vendetta against him and against his operations in Chatham, and now assisting another <br />miner in the County in competition with Martin Marietta. <br />Mr. Thomas Oxholm, Vice President of Wake Stone Corporation, <br />appeared before the Board and gave the history of the operations of the quarry, <br />advised the Board that they discontinued use in 1982, and have since operated quarries <br />in Knightdale and in Cary. That all of their operations were in conformity with <br />State regulatory provisions and if allowed, they intend to make a sizable investment in <br />equipment and provide employment for up to 34 people in the near future. Mr. <br />Oxholm said that they had tried to satisfy any reasonable claim made against their <br />company, whether or not they felt the company was entirely responsible. <br />Mr. John Bratton, President of Wake Stone Corporation, assured the <br />Board that the company had complied with all State laws pertaining to explosives <br />and mining operations and would continue to do so in the future. He reiterated the <br />company's position that it had settled claims which it considered doubtful, trying to <br />be a good neighbor and good corporate citizen. <br />No one else asked to be recognized and Commissioner John R. Dossenbach, <br />Jr. moved that the public hearing be closed. Commissioner Bertha L. Matthews <br />seconded the motion, and upon a vote the results were as follows: <br />AYE: Cox, Dossenbach, Matthews, Wicker and Dotterer. <br />NAY: None <br />The Chairman ruled that the resolution had been unanimously adopted and <br />the public meeting was closed. <br />The Chairman then called for the pleasure of the Board, and when no <br />motions were forthcoming, stated the Board would move on to the next item upon its <br />agenda which was a public hearing on the proposed Lee County Land Development Plan. <br />Commissioner Bertha L. Matthews moved that the Board proceed to hold <br />a public hearing on the Land Development Plan. Commissioner Raymond C. Cox, Jr. <br />seconded the motion and upon a vote the results were as follows: <br />AYE: Cox, Dossenbach, Matthews, Wicker and Dotterer. <br />NAY: None <br />The Chairman declared the resolution had been unanimously adopted and <br />the meeting open for public comment upon the Land Development Plan. <br />
