M. , pursuant to a
call of the Chairman. Those present were: Commissioners Raymond C. Cox, Jr. ;
John R. Dossenbach, Jr. ; John E. Dotterer; Bertha L. Matthews; and Gordon
A. Wicker. Chairman Dotterer ruled that a quorum was present and the meeting
was open for the transaction of business.
Chairman John E. Dotterer presided and the following business was
transacted:
The invocation was given by Dr. Marvin Joyner, President of Central
Carolina Community College.
Dr. Marvin Joyner, President of Central Carolina Community College
appeared before the Board and reviewed the building program at the community
college and emphasized the need for auditorium space. He referred to the fact
that Representative Dennis Wicker had secured a million dollar allocation from
the State for the facility and requested that the County make available two million
dollars in funds in order that such a facility could be built on the site at the corner
of Nash and Kelly Streets. Representative Dennis Wicker appeared before the
Board and endorsed the comments made by President Joyner. Representative
Dennis Wicker asked for a commitment from the Board in order that the State funds
would not be lost. Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker was recognized and in his
remarks recited his long record of careful scrutiny of all budget requests, but he
felt that the County needed the facility and the taxpayers would benefit from a
program which was based on pay as you go rather than paying interest over the
life of some bond issue. Commissioner Wicker then moved the adoption of the
following Resolutions:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners for Lee County
as follows:
Section 1. It is the sense of the Board to fund the construction of
the proposed Resource Center for Central Carolina Community
