BOOK V Pau 5
to relocate the Head Start Program. The Lee County School
System has offered to sell the Crestview School Property on
Linden Avenue which was formerly used as the Lee County
Children's Center to Lee County to be used for the Headstart
program in Lee County. The schools have had an appraisal
made and are asking $53-55,000 for the building.
Commissioner Wicker stated that he feels the situation should
be carefully researched because the property cost the School
Board considerably less than the asking price and many
donations were made by local businesses at the time of
construction.
Chairman Cox and Commissioner Wicker will arrange to
meet with the School Board at their meeting to discuss the
matter.
Chairman Cox recognized the presence of Alice Hairston
who had previously expressed concerns over the condition of
the building housing the food pantry at 807 Tryon Street.
Commissioner Wicker stated that there is to be a meeting at
the Flame on January 12 which might shed some light on the
situation. The Board has offered to allow tenants one
year's free rent in exchange for said tenants paying for
rewiring and refurbishing of the rental property. Nothing
has been done concerning the cosmetic aspects of the building
but they will talk with Hugh Brewer and report later. After
speaking with Mary Ellen Bowen, Coordinator for Downtown
Revitalization Project, Commissioners Wicker and Dossenbach
feel that it will be necessary to set a rent figure before we
will be able to find businesses who might be interested.
Commissioners Dossenbach and Wicker requested that the Board
give them authority to work with Mary Ellen Bowen to develop
a proposed rent schedule to be approved by the full Board
upon completion. After a general discussion, the Board
expressed its desire for Commissioners Dossenbach and Wicker
to proceed.
Commissioner wicker reported briefly on the renovation
of the old Nurse's Home to be used for Lee County's Youth
Shelter. The roof work is complete and heating and air
conditioning work is under consideration.
Chairman Cox briefly described meetings in which he had
