Stafford, Jr., seconded the motion and upon a vote the <br />results were as follows: <br />AYE: Dossenbach, Matthews, Staffnrd and Cox <br />NAY: Wicker <br />The Chairman ruled the resolution had been adopted by a <br />majority vote. <br />The Board observed a short recess, following which the <br />Chairman recognized Mrs. Norma Bullard, Tax Assessor. The Tax Assessor <br />presented the oath of office for the members of the Board of <br />Commissioners to serve as members of the Board of Equalization and <br />Review. The Clerk then administered the oath and each member signed and <br />executed the appropriate oath. <br />Mr. William Connolly, Real Estate Appraiser , Ad Valorem Tax <br />Division of the State Tax Board spoke on the duties of the <br />Commissioners and discussed with them a suggested plan of procedure for <br />holding their hearings. <br />The materials received from the Lee County Drug Action <br />Committee were reviewed and discussed. <br />The Board designated Commissioners Gordon A. Wicker and <br />William C. Stafford, Jr., as their representatives to attend a one day <br />forum discussing the future of public health to be held in Fayetteville, <br />North Carolina on June 15th, 1989. <br />A letter from Mr. David T. Flaherty, Secretary of North <br />Carolina Department of Human Resources, concerning the Family Support <br />Act of 1988 was taken under advisement. <br />A letter of Mr. D. Glenn Berry, Director of Engineering <br />Services for Golden Poultry concerning the contract between Lee County <br />and the City of Sanford was discussed and it was determined there was no <br />need for a response. <br />A letter received from the Robeson County Board of <br />Commissioners seeking legislation giving counties the option to increase <br />the sales tax levy was discussed but no formal action was taken. <br />A letter from Mrs. Dottie Martin concerning campaigns like <br />"Clean Sweep" and "Adopt a Highway" were discussed. The Chairman noted <br />on behalf of the Board its appreciation for those organizations in the <br />County who have participated in the "Adopt a Highway Program". <br />- 7 - <br />
