NJ <br />12 ~,c 725 <br />M <br />L. Matthews moved that the County Manager be authorized to advertise for <br />bids for the air-conditioning work at the jail. Commissioner William C. <br />Stafford, Jr.,seconded the motion and upon a vote the results were as <br />follows: <br />AYE: Dossenbach, Matthews, Stafford, Wicker and Cox <br />NAY: None <br />The Chairman ruled the resolution had been unanimously adopted. <br />The Board observed a short recess following which they reconvened <br />with all members present. <br />The Board next considered a proposed agreement with the San-Lee <br />Humane Society, Inc. to operate an animal control program in Lee County. <br />Mrs. Paulette Schroeder and Dr. Ron Meyers appeared on behalf of the <br />San-Lee Humane Society, Inc. Chairman Albert L. Cox appointed <br />Commissioners Gordon A. Wicker and Bertha L. Matthews as a committee to <br />work with the County Manager to negotiate with the Humane Society over the <br />terms of the contract. <br />Mr. John Hall, Agricultural Extension Chairman, appeared before <br />the Board and requested that the Board adopt a resolution commemorate the <br />75th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act which fostered the development of <br />the agricultural extension service. Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker moved <br />that the Chairman be authorized to execute the following proclamation: <br />WHEREAS the Smith-Lever Act of may 8, 1914 has fostered the <br />development of a system of State Agricultural Extension Services in <br />partnership with our Nation's land-grant universities and county <br />governments for disseminating and encouraging the application of <br />research-generated knowledge and leadership techniques to solve problems of <br />individuals, families, and communities; <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, as a <br />part of the national extension system, has contributed greatly in assisting <br />families and individuals with the efficient production of a reliable supply <br />of food and fiber for consumers, with the improvement of the quality of <br />life, with the development of leadership and community service, and with <br />the achievement and accomplishments of young people through 4-H; <br />WHEREAS, the relationship existing between the Federal, State and <br />County Extension Services has provided for citizen input to research and <br />educational programs of the land grant universities of our state for three <br />quarters of a century; and <br />WHEREAS, the citizens of Lee County have benefitted and continue <br />- 4 - <br />
