aooK 13 13
® 0
Colon Road site, bi7C that was prior to hearing what he thought
was overwhelming majority public opinion to stay at the present
site. Therefore, on each instance he has tried to keep options
available that included this site. He advised that from what he
is hearing and seeing he will try to work on doing something at
the present location because that is what the people want.
Commissioner Dossenbach also thanked everyone for coming
tonight and stated it is gratifying to get input from citizens.
He advised the way he read it there is an absolute majority that
this courthouse will stay in its present location because he
also will vote that way. He advised that several times during
this discussion certain Commissioners have been willing to
compromise, but for some reason compromise was never talked
about. He hoped for a unanimous decision from this Board and go
forward and build an addition and a new jail on this site.
Commissioner Cox advised that this sounded like a forgone
conclusion to him because there are three commissioners who are
committed to stay here and a 3 to 2 vote is a majority on this
Board of five members. However, there is another side of that
coin. The Mullins-West plan was not original nor was it the
first plan. The Board did essentially the same thing with the
architect selected to do this job. Mr. Dossenbach and Mr.
Stafford served on the committee on the courthouse/jail project.
They were charged with the responsibility of considering the
advantages and disadvantages on siting this most important
project for Lee County. They performed this task diligently and
admirably. After carefully inspecting and considering the
existing courthouse/jail site and five or six other locations,
both Mr. Stafford and Mr. Dossenbach recommended the Colon
Road site without qualification. By motion made and duly
seconded both Mr. Stafford and Mr. Dossenbach voted with
Chairman Wicker and he to option the Colon Road site for this
facility. He quoted from an editorial in the Sanford Herald:
"County Commissioners have been unable to reach a strong
consensus or even a slim majority in discussion of the
question." As mentioned before, there was a 4 to 1 vote for the
Colon Road site which is not mentioned any more in discussions
of this project. He feels we will be making a serious mistake
if we rely on short term solutions for what will certainly be a
long term problem. He advised that the total dollar amount
spent will, in all probability, be roughly the same irrespective
of the site that is selected. He asked the public and his
fellow Commissioners to please use common sense and logic to
determine the best possible use of our resources to benefit Lee
County now and in the future. He concluded that he will support
whatever the majority of this Board votes for.
Chairman Wicker thanked everyone for coming out tonight and
expressing themselves. He advised the Board would consider some
business and people were welcome to stay or leave at this time.
The Board observed a short recess. Following the recess,
the Board convened with all members present. The following
3
