042
LEE COUNTY CAMPUS
1105 Kelly Drive • Sanford, NC 27330
919-775-5401 • (PAX)919-718-7378
SERVING CHATHAM, LEE & HARNE"rT COUNTIES
Mr. John Crompton
County Manager, Lee County
106 Hillcrest Drive
Sanford, NC 27330
Dear Mr. Crompton:
I am writing to ask that you add a request from CCCC to the Board agenda for the
next meeting of the Lee County Board of Commissioners. As you know, after several
delays the College is close to completion of the Emergency Services Training Center at
the former site of the Sanford/Lee County Airport. If things continue to go well we
should be able to occupy the new classroom building at that location by early October.
However, to bring the project to a successful conclusion we need the Board to approve
the release of $ 109,776 (carried in account # 4814 as project contingency) to cover some
unexpected costs.
I have attached a copy of a college request to the Board in June of'2007 that outlines
some of the additional costs incurred early in the project that required re-design and re-
S bidding of the project. We had incurred unanticipated costs at that point in excess of
$ 300,000. After re-design and re-bidding of the project we needed $ 92,173 of
additional budget to be able to accept the low bid. The Board approved that request. At
that time (as outlined in the request) our project contingency need was estimated at
$ 68,500 for the remainder of the project.
Unanticipated costs in the actual construction phase of the project are outlined below.
1. Replace unsuitable soil in preparation of parking lot for paving. $ 33,666.00
2. Placing 2" conduit between buildings for communications link. 1,549.86
3. Repair drain inlets at three locations. 1,650.00
4. Build-up and re-pave 200' section of driveway between new
building and automotive shop to aid in drainage and prevention
of flooding of auto shop. 21,634.13
S 58.999.99
With the release of contingency funds set aside by the county, we believe that this
project can be completed in `ready to use' condition. Thank you for your assistance in
this matter.
Sincerely,
G. Wayne Robinson, CPA, MBA
Vice President for Administrative Services.
Lee County
Managers Office
SEP 0 4 2003
