D.
_ Information
Meeting Date: September 15, 2008 XX Action Item
- Consent Agenda
L~
SUBJECT: Request from Taxpayers to Relieve Interest Charge
DEPARTMENT: Tax Administration
CONTACT PERSON: Dwane Brinson
REQUEST: Relief from paying interest on 1998 tax bills
SUMMARY: NCGS 105 - 378 gives the Tax Collector authority to use enforced
collection remedies for a period of ten years from the due date of a
tax. In accordance with this statute, the Tax Collector is able to use
enforced collection on the 1998 tax bills up until August 31, 2008. In
an effort to collect on those delinquent tax bills, tax office staff has
been diligently searching to locate the individuals still owing these
almost ten-year-old tax bills. We have been highly successful.
However, some individuals wish to not pay interest that has been
accruing over the last ten years. For this, I must present the cases
to the Board of County Commissioners.
BUDGET IMPACT: N/A
ATTACHMENT(S): (1) Customer tax statements of 1998 bills with interest and
principal;
(2) Letter from Mrs. Sherry Melton, Hendersonville, TN
PUBLIC HEARING:
PRIOR BOARD ACTION:
RECOMMENDATION:
No
N/A
Deny request to relieve interest charges
11
