book 1:3 yr <br />Report for January, 0 1990 be authorized and approved. A copy of <br />the report is attached to these minutes and by this reference <br />made a part hereof. Commissioner Matthews seconded the motion <br />and upon a vote the results were as follows: <br />Aye: Cox, Dossenbach, Matthews, Stafford and Wicker <br />Nay: None <br />The Chairman ruled the motion carried unanimously. <br />The Board next considered appointing a Board member to <br />serve as a liaison to the Fire Departments. Commissioner <br />Matthews was appointed as the Board's liaison. Commissioner Cox <br />requested that the Fire Departments be asked to send their <br />reports in at the same time. The County Manager was asked to <br />notify the Fire Departments of Commissioner Matthews <br />appointment as liaison. <br />The Board next considered Budget Amendment #03/05/90/15. <br />Copy is attached to these minutes and by this reference made.a <br />part hereof. The County Manager reviewed the budget amendment. <br />Following the explanation, Commissioner Dossenbach moved that <br />the Budget Amendment be approved. Commissioner Stafford <br />seconded the motion and upon a vote the results were as <br />follows: <br />Aye: Cox, Dossenbach, Matthews, Stafford and Wicker <br />Nay: None <br />The Chairman ruled the motion carried unanimously. <br />Commissioner Stafford reported that it has been requested by <br />the Lee County Environmental Affairs Board that the Commissioners <br />go on record opposing the proposed placement of a low-level <br />radio active waste site on the Chatham/Wake border line. <br />Commissioner Stafford introduced Mr. Larry Thomas, Public Works <br />Director for the City of Sanford who was invited to the meeting <br />to share any concerns he may have with respect to the City's <br />water. Mr. Thomas explained that about 50% of the proposed <br />area is upstream from their water treatment plant and there is a <br />potential for contamination of water supply. <br />Commissioner Cox advised that if our efforts fail in the <br />opposition of this site, we need to make demands on the authority <br />because the facility on that site will have almost the same <br />effect on Lee County as it would if it were in our northern <br />corner, but we would not get any of the impact fees and highways <br />that are needed. Mr. Thomas reported that the City intends to <br />make them aware that it will be upstream from their water <br />treatment plant. Commissioner Stafford advised that he had <br />contacted Larry Varner of the County's water plant and had been <br />told they would have to immediately put in some new testing <br />equipment just to insure they are protected. The cost of that <br />equipment and ongoing testing would have to be placed on <br />customers; therefore, causing rates to go up. Mr. Thomas stated <br />11 <br />
