Mr. <br />Barker advised that most are County sponsored, operated through <br />the County with money channeled through the County to a <br />Department of Tourism that would operate independent of the <br />County, but with a Board of Directors or Commission. Mr. <br />Barker was not aware of the actual cost involved. <br />After discussion, the Board agreed that since this was an <br />area of responsibility of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Barker <br />should discuss this proposal with them. Mr. Joyce advised that <br />Mr. Nelson of the Chamber of Commerce has indicated that the <br />Chamber would welcome a study on tourism. <br />Mr. Leonard Barefoot, County Planner, and Ms. Celia <br />Dickerson, Chairman Planning Board, appeared before the Board <br />and presented a certified copy of the proposed County Zoning <br />Ordinance. Mr. Barefoot advised that the Planning Board <br />unanimously recommended that a Public Hearing be held <br />to consider adoption of this Ordinance. Mr. Barefoot reported <br />that in 1985 the Planning Board began its effort to develop a <br />Land Use Plan. The Planning Board and a Citizen Committee <br />completed that draft and presented it to this Board in late <br />1988. This Board adopted the Land Development Plan and <br />recommended a County Zoning Ordinance. The Planning Board began <br />its work on the document in January of 1989. In early 1990 the <br />Land Use Survey was completed and during this time every land <br />use in Lee County was surveyed. This work cumulated in the <br />recommendation on May 30th by the Planning Board. Mr. Barefoot <br />expressed his appreciation to the Planning Board members for the <br />many hours spent on this along with his staff and-the Division <br />of Community Planning in Raleigh. <br />Ms. Dickerson expressed her appreciation to the Planning <br />office and the Division of Community Planning for their <br />excellent technical and professional assistance. She also <br />conveyed to the Board the diligence and conscientiousness of the <br />Planning Board members who represent different parts of the <br />County and diverse interest. They spent many an hour examining <br />the document and asking "What If" questions. Lastly she thanked <br />the Commissioners for the confidence they placed in the Planning <br />Board. <br />Commissioner Matthews moved to accept the recommendation of <br />the Planning Board to hold a Public Hearing on the Ordinance. <br />Commissioner Cox seconded the motion and upon a vote the results <br />were as follows: <br />Aye: Cox, Dossenbach, Matthews, Stafford and Wicker <br />Nay: None <br />The Chairman ruled the motion carried unanimously. <br />The Board requested that Mr. Barefoot include in the Notice <br />of the Public Hearing that copies of the proposed zoning <br />ordinance are available for inspection at the Library as well as <br />2 <br />
