Mr. Barker advised that most are County sponsored, operated through the County with money channeled through the County to a Department of Tourism that would operate independent of the County, but with a Board of Directors or Commission. Mr. Barker was not aware of the actual cost involved. After discussion, the Board agreed that since this was an area of responsibility of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Barker should discuss this proposal with them. Mr. Joyce advised that Mr. Nelson of the Chamber of Commerce has indicated that the Chamber would welcome a study on tourism. Mr. Leonard Barefoot, County Planner, and Ms. Celia Dickerson, Chairman Planning Board, appeared before the Board and presented a certified copy of the proposed County Zoning Ordinance. Mr. Barefoot advised that the Planning Board unanimously recommended that a Public Hearing be held to consider adoption of this Ordinance. Mr. Barefoot reported that in 1985 the Planning Board began its effort to develop a Land Use Plan. The Planning Board and a Citizen Committee completed that draft and presented it to this Board in late 1988. This Board adopted the Land Development Plan and recommended a County Zoning Ordinance. The Planning Board began its work on the document in January of 1989. In early 1990 the Land Use Survey was completed and during this time every land use in Lee County was surveyed. This work cumulated in the recommendation on May 30th by the Planning Board. Mr. Barefoot expressed his appreciation to the Planning Board members for the many hours spent on this along with his staff and-the Division of Community Planning in Raleigh. Ms. Dickerson expressed her appreciation to the Planning office and the Division of Community Planning for their excellent technical and professional assistance. She also conveyed to the Board the diligence and conscientiousness of the Planning Board members who represent different parts of the County and diverse interest. They spent many an hour examining the document and asking "What If" questions. Lastly she thanked the Commissioners for the confidence they placed in the Planning Board. Commissioner Matthews moved to accept the recommendation of the Planning Board to hold a Public Hearing on the Ordinance. Commissioner Cox seconded the motion and upon a vote the results were as follows: Aye: Cox, Dossenbach, Matthews, Stafford and Wicker Nay: None The Chairman ruled the motion carried unanimously. The Board requested that Mr. Barefoot include in the Notice of the Public Hearing that copies of the proposed zoning ordinance are available for inspection at the Library as well as 2
