BOOR 13 rr;C= 16 <br />WHEREAS, Parcels of land located in Wake and Chatham Counties <br />have been identified as possible sites for a Regional Low-Level <br />Radioactive Waste Facility; and <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina Low-Level Radioactive Waste <br />Management Authority is charged with the responsibility for <br />selecting a site for the facility; and <br />WHEREAS, the possible site in Wake and Chatham Counties is <br />located adjacent to the Cape Fear River,lakes and streams which feed <br />water supplies to The City of Sanford and the County of Lee and <br />provide recreational facilities; <br />WHEREAS, there is concern that the facility may adversely <br />impact land values in the County, and <br />WHEREAS, the presence of the facility may discourage Economic <br />Development in the County, and <br />WHEREAS, the transportation of waste material to the facility <br />may create difficult traffic problems and potential hazards from <br />accidents, and, <br />WHEREAS, Lee County may have to provide extraordinary emergency <br />response capability, and <br />WHEREAS, despite technical assurances to the contrary, there <br />are concerns about the adverse impact on the health, safety and <br />welfare of Lee County residents, and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Lee County Board of <br />Commissioners, City of Sanford and Town of Broadway that: <br />Lee County, City of Sanford and Town of Broadway are opposed to <br />the location of the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Facility in <br />Wake and Chatham Counties, but <br />In the event the facility is located in Wake and Chatham <br />Counties notwithstanding the objectives of the Board, wherever <br />the facility is located, the site be selected based not only <br />on its technical and environmental suitability, but also on <br />socio-economic factors; <br />Opportunities be provided for community involvement in <br />responding to local concerns equally to afforded host counties <br />Local community benefit programs be developed in cooperation <br />with the Lee County Board of Commissioners or their designees <br />3 <br />
