The Board agreed to table this <br />matter until they had a chance to study the draft resolution <br />submitted by Mr. McLaughlin. Commissioner Cox, the liaison with <br />the Recreation Commission, advised he would met with Mr. <br />McLaughlin on this Resolution after he received the Board's <br />comments on the draft. <br />The County Manager reported on a letter he received from <br />the Wake County Manager requesting that Lee County endorse the <br />concept of a regional sports authority. Commissioner Stafford <br />moved for the adoption of the following resolution: <br />WHEREAS, Lee County recognizes that our community is part <br />of a region commonly identified as "the Triangle", and <br />WHEREAS, local governments located in the Triangle area <br />have long recognized the value of a regional approach to issues <br />which transcend their own jurisdictions, and <br />WHEREAS, the promotion of large-scale sporting events and <br />endeavors is in the best interests of all local governments in <br />the Triangle because of the potential for generation of revenue, <br />and national as well as international exposure, and <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina General Assembly has enacted <br />enabling legislation which provides for the creation of regional <br />sports authorities, and <br />WHEREAS, a regional sports authority is the logical <br />vehicle to promote the Triangle area as a site for national and <br />international sporting events, and <br />WHEREAS, the Triangle area is a potential location for some <br />of the 1994 World Cup Soccer matches, and <br />WHEREAS, interest has been expressed in the Triangle area <br />as a potential location for a National Football League franchise, <br />and <br />WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the region that the <br />various local governments join in promoting the region as a <br />location for such major sporting activities, and <br />WHEREAS, Lee County wishes to join with other local <br />governments in the Triangle area in the promotion of the area as <br />a location for such large-scale sporting events. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Lee County Board <br />of Commissioners endorse the concept of joining with other local <br />governments in the region to create a regional sports authority <br />in accordance with the provisions of part 3 of Article 20, <br />Chapter 160A of the North Carolina General Statutes. <br />Commissioner Cox seconded the motion and upon a vote, the <br />8 <br />
