LEE COUNT <br />S : Committed Today for a Better Tomorrow <br />RESOLUTION <br />TO SUPPORT <br />KIDS VOTING PROGRAM <br />IN LEE COUNTY <br />WHEREAS, Lee County encourages civic education and youth participation in our community <br />and in local government; and <br />WHEREAS, Kids Voting promotes voter participation by educating youth about the importance <br />of being an informed citizen and the responsibilities of voting to sustain democracy; and <br />WHEREAS, Kids Voting USA is recognized in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 as a <br />program that improves the quality of education and promotes voter education, and <br />WHEREAS, Kids Voting has consistently been mentioned as a highly effective civic education <br />program for teaching the understanding of the voting process and the importance of the <br />privilege of voting that we are afforded in this country; and <br />• WHEREAS, twenty -three school systems in North Carolina participate in Kids Voting; and <br />WHEREAS, Communities in Schools of Lee County has agreed to coordinate the program by <br />helping to ensure adequate funding and by securing needed volunteers; and <br />WHEREAS, Lee County Board of Education's Curriculum and Instruction Committee voted to <br />recommend implementation of the Kids Voting program for students in grades K -12 effective in <br />the 2006 -07 school year; and <br />WHEREAS, Lee County Board of Education approved the implementation of the Kids Voting <br />program on May 8, 2006; and <br />WHEREAS, Lee County Board of Elections approved of the Kids Voting program and offered <br />their support on July 12, 2006; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lee County Board of Commissioners <br />recognizes that Kids Voting is a creative and effective way to teach about democracy, <br />citizenship, and the election process and do hereby give full support for implementing this <br />program in Lee County Schools. <br />Adopted this 17 day of July, 2006. <br />• ATTEST: <br />C a n 11 M.
