oor 13 pt'CE 400 ~ <br />Commissioner Cox seconded the motion which carried unanimously. <br />The Board then observed a short recess. Following the <br />recess, the Board convened with all members present. <br />Mr. Derrell Mullins, of Mullins-Sherman Architects was <br />recognized and presented proposals for asbestos abatement for <br />the Lee County Government Center. The Board authorized Mr. <br />Mullins to negotiate for a lump sum contract with the low <br />bidder. <br />The County Manager advised that he received a package of <br />information from Mr. Scott Carpenter who is with the North <br />Carolina Community Colleges. They are asking every County to <br />support their efforts to increase the amount of money that the <br />General Assembly puts in the Community College Program. <br />Commissioner Dossenbach moved for the adoption of the <br />following Resolution: <br />WHEREAS, The community college system has served as the <br />bridge to occupational opportunity for hundreds of thousands of <br />North Carolinians; and <br />WHEREAS, It has transformed high school dropouts into high <br />school graduates, turned high school graduates into skilled <br />technicians, and turned two year college graduates into four <br />year college and university graduates; and <br />WHEREAS, It has been a catalyst for economic development by <br />bringing new industry into the state, helping businesses <br />incorporate new technologies with a trained workforce, and <br />provided assistance to entrepreneurs; and <br />WHEREAS, It is our determination that if North Carolina is <br />to stay competitive with other states, we will need to ensure <br />that our community college system has adequate funding to handle <br />the needs of an increasingly technological society; and <br />WHEREAS, In recognition that our community colleges need <br />greater resources to meet the challenges of an economy that <br />requires a more educated workforce, the Commission on the Future <br />of North Carolina Community College System has recommended that <br />we retool our community colleges; be it hereby <br />RESOLVED That the Lee County Board of Commissioners offers <br />its full endorsement to the proposals in the commission report <br />and urges its suggested new levels of funding be adopted by the <br />General Assembly. <br />Commissioner Stafford seconded the motion and upon a vote <br />the results were as follows: <br />Aye: Cox, Dossenbach, Matthews, Stafford and Wicker <br />Nay: None <br />8 <br />
